Please note that Uber and Lyft are not available in Lucca. We highly recommend downloading the AppTaxi app before traveling, as it may not function properly with a U.S. number once in Italy. Taxis and private drivers can be scheduled in advance to pick you up from nearby hotels or airports. Renting a car is also a great option if you’d like to explore the beautiful Tuscan countryside at your own pace.

While convenient, flights into Pisa typically require a connection and are often more expensive than flights into Florence. Rental Car
If you plan to rent a car during your stay in Italy, it is strongly recommended that you obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) through AAA. The permit costs $20 USD and must be ordered in advance, as a physical copy is required. Some rental agencies strictly enforce this rule and may refuse service if you only have documentation without the physical card, so it's best to plan ahead (we know from experience). Please also be aware that Italy has strict drinking and driving laws. The legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit is 0.05%. Please do not drink and drive!
