Rachel and Mike both attended Johns Hopkins University and had a similar group of friends, but they didn't meet until the winter of Rachel's junior and Mike's senior year. Their first interaction was during a Ravens game at Cross Street Market, when Rachel asked Mike if he could just "explain football real quick," which he very patiently did. Just a few weeks later, a mutual friend (thanks Marah!) set them up for a formal, and once Rachel saw Mike's dance moves and American flag tie, the rest was history.
Rachel and Mike were on vacation in Hawaii with the Campellone family. The trip happened to overlap with their six year anniversary, and everyone had a feeling Mike might propose... except for Rachel, who was absolutely convinced he wasn't popping the question until later that summer (on LBI, of course). Their second night in Maui, Mike said they were going to meet on the beach for a family photo before dinner, and Rachel thought nothing of it. As they walked down to the water, Rachel spotted a professional photographer with all of his gear and no one to photograph. She (no kidding) said to Mike, "Ooh look — a photographer! He's definitely here for a proposal. I bet some girl is about to get engaged and has no idea!" Mike could hardly keep a straight face, but they kept walking. A little ways down the beach he stopped, took both of Rachel's hands in his, and began telling the story of how they first met. Rachel was confused. Mike got down on one knee. Rachel STILL couldn't figure it out... so she also got down on one knee. Finally, it dawned on her that it was sunset, on the beach in Maui, and Mike was on his knee... and she very quickly stood up to say YES.
