Sheldon Church, formerly known as the Prince William Parish Church, has a tumultuous and eventful history. From its first service in 1757 to its present peaceful setting, the church has followed the travails of our nation’s history. It is one, if not the first church built in temple form in the United States. Please note that the ruins rest on private property. The owner, St. Helena’s Church in Beaufort, asks us to share these guidelines for visiting: No climbing on the ruins or grave markers, no touching of the ruins, no littering or defacing the ruins or surrounding property, and respecting the authority of preservationists and St. Helena’s Church members who are charged with maintaining the property.

The Pat Conroy Literary Center will cultivate a passionate and inclusive reading and writing community in honor of Pat Conroy, who dedicated his life to spreading his love for literature and writing to future generations. “Love’s action. It isn’t talking and it never has been.” ~Beach Music Pat started his working life in Beaufort as a teacher, however, he went on to become one of America’s best-loved writers, revered for his extraordinary storytelling abilities, his truth-telling courage, and his great heart. The Pat Conroy Literary Center will provide space for book clubs and writing groups, offer master classes in poetry, memoir and fiction, and give support and encouragement to both emerging and advanced writers of all ages. We believe the act of writing can bring meaning in and of itself, changing both our own lives and our world. A center where writers help other writers is a fitting tribute to Pat’s life and works.
Take a light stroll down the Port Royal boardwalk along Battery Creek. Look out over the vast waterway while taking in the warm coastal breeze and enjoying the wildlife. You will see dolphins playing, coastal birds wading and fishing along the water’s edge, and birds of prey flying above. If fishing or photography is your thing, the boardwalk is a great option. Completely free and open to the public it is a favorite local spot.
St. Helena Parish Chapel of Ease Ruins is a historic site in Frogmore, South Carolina on Saint Helena Island.The Anglican chapel was constructed in 1740 by planters on Saint Helena Island as a chapel of ease for parishioners who had difficulty traveling to worship at the main parish church in Beaufort, South Carolina. The ruins were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
