Where to Stay: Hotel Zone, Aldea Zama, or Tulum Town

Tulum is split into the inland, city center “Tulum Town” and beach area “hotel zone.” Aldea Zama is a large, residential area between the two. The wedding festivities will be held in the hotel zone. You can easily travel between the areas by rental bike (30 min from Town to the hotel zone) or a cheap cab (~200 MXN pesos, or 7.50 US dollars, from Town to hotel zone). The hotel zone and Tulum Town both have tons of great restaurants, bars, local stores, hotels, and Airbnb's, and you can hail cabs from the street. There is parking in town but limited parking until midnight in the hotel zone. If you're staying in the hotel zone or do not plan on frequently going far distances, we do not recommend renting a car. Aldea Zama has modern, affordable apartments available on Airbnb and Hotels.com and plenty of parking space, but confirm with your Airbnb host. There are no cabs on the street to hail, so ask your host for phone numbers.

Travel Note

Before You Fly: What to Know & Bring

What to bring: - Sunscreen* - Mosquito repellant* - Sunglasses - Rain jacket and/or ponchos - Sandals - Cash for the weekend to convert to pesos - Hand sanitizer* - Bathing suit - Warmer clothes for evenings * Keep liquids within the TSA's limits for carry-on luggage What to know: - Always ask whether the ice and water are filtered. Virtually all establishments in the Hotel Zone use filtered ice and water, but it's always worth an ask. - If you will get to Tulum Town before 8:00 p.m., exchange your cash at a bank in town for a better exchange rate than at the airport. Taxis from the airport would take you to a bank in town. The Chedraui (large supermarket in Tulum Town) has trustworthy ATMs! - Buy a bunch of large water bottles at the airport to take around with you and extras to leave in your hotel room to brush your teeth.

Flight

Step 1: Cancún International Airport

Cancún International Airport (CUN) is the closest airport to Tulum, about 1.5-2 hours away by car, private shuttle, or bus. Consider buying some snacks (or a margarita at the outdoor cafe) at the airport before you leave. See the next note on how to get to Tulum from the airport by ADO bus. Check back soon for details on private cars and shuttles. Do not take any private cars from the airport that you did not book in advance. EXCHANGING PESOS We do not recommend exchanging much, if any, cash at the airport. Everyone at the airport accepts credit cards, so you will need cash for Tulum only. If you will get to Tulum Town before 8:00 p.m., you can exchange cash at a better rate there, at a bank or an ATM at Chedraui (big market like Walmart). If you take a cab, they will take you to an ATM in town.

Travel Note

Step 2: From Airport to Tulum - The ADO Bus

ADO is the main bus company in the Riviera Maya and a very convenient and cheap way to travel from Cancún airport to Tulum Town (about 1 hr and 50 min). The buses are modern with TVs, outlets, and suitcase storage under the bus. We strongly recommend purchasing tickets in advance. The bus schedules are listed on their website (click "View" below). At the airport, ask the people at the ADO bus counter to direct you to the pickup spot (show them your ticket). Once you get to the pickup spot, confirm with the ADO bus personnel there that you are at the correct spot. When you arrive in Tulum town, take a taxi to your hotel. Ask your bus driver or hotel what the fare should be. The taxis do not have meters, so make sure to agree on a price before riding. Many taxis accept cash only. If you do not have cash, they will take you to an ATM. We recommend the ATM at Chedraui. The ATMs on the road from town to the beach are not trustworthy! ATMs are more expensive in the hotel zone.

Cab Information

Cabs are not metered, so always agree with the driver on the fare beforehand. You can haggle if the price is much higher than the average rates listed below. Most cabs only accept cash. You don't need to tip in a cab. Average cab rates: - Getting around in the hotel zone: ~100 MXN pesos (about 5 USD) - From Aldea Zama to the hotel zone: ~150 MXN pesos (about 7.50 USD) - From Tulum Town to the hotel zone: ~200 MXN pesos (about 10 USD) Check back here soon for cab contact information.
