The closest airport to Tulum is Cancún International Airport (CUN). It is a little under 2 hours from CUN to Tulum by car, private shuttle, or bus.
Yes! If you don’t already have one, do not forget to apply for it as soon as possible! It can take 6 to 8 weeks to get one, so start far in advance. The process can be expedited to 2 to 3 weeks, but that is more costly.
Come when you can and leave when you must! ;) Since our wedding is on Saturday, December 7, we recommend a trip of about 3-4 nights between Thursday, December 6 and Monday, December 10. We are planning group activities on Friday, so we don't want you to miss out on the fun! If you want to wander off on your own, there are plenty of activities, like visiting the cenotes, Mayan ruins, and the beautiful playa (check out the "Things to Do" page for more details) and walking around Tulum Town, the city center.
Yes and no. Every restaurant and hotel that we have been to provides filtered water and ice, but always ask first to make sure! Before you order fresh fruit or vegetables, ask whether they wash them with filtered water. HOWEVER, the running water in your bathroom is probably not filtered, so check with your hotel or Airbnb host. If it is not filtered, buy a few big bottles of water to leave in your hotel room to brush your teeth and wash your hands.
Tulum is just like any other city, like New York or LA. It is safe if you're aware of your surroundings and stay in the main areas, or it can be dangerous if you are by yourself at night or end up off the beaten path. The hotel zone is very international and upscale, and the Tulum Town is more local. We have stayed in both areas over the last several years, always around this time of year, and we never felt unsafe or scared. We always feel very welcome.
1. Before you take a taxi, ask the hotel what the fare should be. 2. Only ride in cars that are clearly marked as taxis. 3. You can haggle. 4. Always agree on the price before you ride. The taxis do not have meters. 5. Bring cash because they do not accept payment by card. If you do not have cash, they will usually take you to an ATM or bank. 6. It is usually very easy to hail a cab from the main street of Tulum Town and the hotel zone, but we will provide you with a number shortly.
The temperature of Tulum in December is more moderate. The average daily temperature is 75°F. It can be as warm as 85°F in the sun and 65°F under the stars. Regardless of the weather forecast, plan for unexpected rainfall, hot days, and cooler evenings.
The exchange rate hovers around 1 USD to 20 MXN (Mexican pesos). Check online for an updated rate before you leave. Of course, you will be charged a different rate at a bank or ATM. We recommend using an official currency exchange bank in Tulum Town, where rates are cheaper, as opposed to at the airport or in the hotel zone.
We highly recommend the Super Chedraui, which is like a supermarket combined with a Walmart. It is conveniently located at the intersection of the main road in Tulum Town and the road that leads to the hotel zone. It has a massive selection of local and international groceries, pharmacy items, toiletries, suitcases, cheap liquor, wine, a bakery, and ATMs.
Dress code is semi-formal, jungle chic! Think linen and silk!
We'll be outside for the night of the wedding, so ladies, please opt for wedges or thick heels over stilettos.
