If you're looking for things to do in Plettenberg Bay - you can admire the majestic big cats of the world – Lions, Tigers, Leopards, Pumas and Jaguars. The animals - at their forever home – Jukani, have been rescued or re homed from facilities that could no longer care for them. At Jukani they can now explore their large natural habitat, designed and built around each individual animal’s needs. They are free of exploitation and the stress caused by human interaction. They can be appreciated and photographed in all their magnificence.
Birds of Eden is home to about 220 different types of birds, and more than 3500 birds live in the sanctuary. Our award winning bird sanctuary provides a forever home where previously caged birds can live a life of free-flight in a habitat as large and natural as is possible. The feathered inhabitants of the aviary are comprised of a mixture of exotic, as well as African birds. This includes previously caged pets, hand reared and imprinted individuals, which in turn explains why some of our inhabitants, mainly being the parrots, (of which we have 60 different species) are unafraid of human beings and seemingly tame. All new arrivals at Birds of Eden go through a process of rehabilitation before their final release into the main aviary. Most of the birds that arrive at Birds of Eden have a history of being caged in small environments.
We have hiked the Robberg Nature Reserve a few times and it is one of the most beautiful hikes! Child friendly and not too hectic. Suitable for all ages! Some highlight features of a visit here include spotting the rare blue duiker, the Western Cape’s smallest antelope; walking alongside one of the seven climbing-falling dunes on the Cape coastline; and viewing the highest navigational light on the South African coastline, at the Cape Seal Lighthouse (146m above sea level). The reserve also extends 1.8km offshore, providing protection to a range of vulnerable fish species. Visitors can expect inspiring landscapes, exciting dolphin and whale sightings in season, and to be accompanied on their walks or hikes by a variety of bird species and the occasional seal. An overnight hut is available for those who want to spend more time on this beautiful reserve.
Knysna Elephant Park(est. 1994) was the first facility in South Africa to house and care for orphaned African elephants. Over the last twenty years, the park has cared for and raised more than forty elephants. These animals include relocated animals, orphaned calves, elephants rescued from culls and ex-circus animals. Some have become part of the resident herd, others have moved onto other reserves and facilities in the Western and Eastern Cape, depending on their personalities, bonds with other animals and welfare needs. The present KEP herd numbers ten – the largest domesticated matriarchal herd in the country. Our style of management offers guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with our elephants, on elephant terms. Responsible and educational interactions allow guests to appreciate the awe-inspiring presence of these animals, but still give the elephants the space and freedom to choose where they want to move, what they want to eat and who they want to interact with.
The terrace of Enrico’s in Plettenberg Bay is a prime site for watching dolphins and whales with swooping views across the bay to Robberg. The atmosphere inside is friendly, homely and relaxed with Enrico always making an effort to come out of the kitchen and chat with friends and patrons.
The Bungalow sits a stone’s throw from the water’s edge at one of Plettenberg Bay’s favorite playgrounds – Hobie Beach. Our downstairs, sea-facing, viewing decks are shaded under indigenous Milkwood trees and share the spotlight with a funky plunge pool, basking in the summer sun beneath a sprawling upper deck overlooking the entire bay. Other special features include a tranquil, private area on the rock cliff-face side of the establishment for more intimate gatherings with a cozy fire boma area, perfect for entertaining. There are several relaxation areas where you can enjoy an afternoon nap or a good book while chilling on the verandah to the soothing sounds of the waves crashing on the beach. Complementing the natural beauty of the beach, the warm Indian Ocean and timeless design, we create an exceptional experience with our Restaurant and Bar – and the best part - you can leave your flip-flops at the door!
