Our love story began in San Francisco, when we both happened to be attending the annual Guardsmen Tree Lot Holiday Party at Fort Mason. We both were getting a bourbon at the bar from our mutual friend Adam. Jay introduced himself, and some flirtatious banter was exchanged back and forth. From that point on we became inseparable. Holding hands while meandering around the party, laughing and trading sweet glances. The party was coming to an end, and it was time to leave, Jay invited Rebecca back to The Zepplin Hotel. Rebecca was trying to play coy, but Jay's charisma and charm was disarming. She wasn't ready to say goodbye just yet, so off they went. We proceeded to play skeeball, basket ball shooting, and other arcade games till the wee hours of the morning. When they were asked to please return to their room from the hotel staff, Jay decided to show off his DJ Skills and we proceeded to have a dance party in the room. * To be clear nothing but dance moves and DJ fist bumps happened. After that magical evening and discovering a mutual love of travel, design, food, fashion and all things bougie… the rest is history!
The story of our engagement is also the story of the ring and how that came together for the planned engagement, it's a lot of fun! Rebecca had very specific ideas for her ideal ring. The type of cut, setting, band, etc, she knew precisely what she wanted. That is both a blessing and a curse! We had gone to a few places in downtown LA to look at options. It was clear, finding something wasn't possible. I had her send me a pic of her dream ring. I then spoke to my groomsman Matt and his now wife Maggie. Maggie's family lives in Hawaii and LA, her mom has had a few kids get engaged lately and had a favorite jeweler in Beverly Hills. She set me up with her people there and I ended up designing a ring and getting a stone from Israel to get that exact look with perfect clarity! Then to save a few thousand on taxes- I had the ring sent to Matt and Maggie in NY, they then brought it to LA and handed it to groomsmen Josh- as I was out of town per usual. All of this was very cloak and dagger and there are some pictures of this handoff somewhere! Once the ring was secured and hidden in the safe, plans for when and how to give it to Rebecca could be made. It took me a few weeks to get a plan together. This is still pandemic times in 2020 and Rebecca was still living in Martinez. She was often upset when our gaps in visits were more than a few weeks, and it felt that something needed to happen sooner vs. later. We all were stuck of being home mainly, not totally locked down- but still, it sucked as we all know. So happiness had to be on the horizon!
I decided a little spring break to Cabo is a good cover story, and to make it even more of a curve ball, Dennis and Josh joined in on the trip. How could she think this was an engagement trip? The guys and Rebecca are best friends too, so it was going to be a great trip. We did ask some of her friends to join, but none of them could. So we made the March trip to Cabo, and it was pretty empty but felt so nice to have all that air and beach in front of us. For the actual proposal- I had been working with the resort Garza Blanca. I had gotten a membership/ownership there in 2019 when we went with Rebecca's family to the PVR location. Their staff is top-notch and was able to give me lots of options and I came up with a plan. I told Rebecca that we had a cool beach activity up the beach, and she was convinced we were going to ride horses or something. We were walking in the sand in nicer clothing, so perhaps her radar was up, I also had a staffer following us and the horse thing played, but he also took some pictures for us. It took 10 min to get to the right spot and then a helicopter flew over and was trying to land on the beach. Rebecca exclaimed "that's not for us is it?" it had to make a re-approach and took back off, and she said "oh." Well, it came back around and landed and I said, let's go! We took a nice sunset flight and then landed on a secluded beach where we got out and then I took a knee and asked her to marry me and gave her what I hoped was her dream ring! She said of course, yes! and then we cracked some bubbly and enjoyed the rest of the sunset ride. When we got back there was a private beach chef dinner for the 4 of us to celebrate and have a night to remember. We really loved having Josh and Dennis there for all of this.
