The Castelo de São Jorge is a historic 11th-century Moorish citadel perched on Lisbon's highest hill. It features imposing medieval stone walls, 11 fortified towers, and an active archaeological site. Today, it is most famous for offering spectacular, 360-degree panoramic views over the city and the Tagus River
We were here in February 2025. Amazing history and peace at the top of this cliff. The experience is more hiking trails among historical walls and turrets than that of a castle, but it is a must-see in Sintra with sweeping panoramic views of the town and coastline. Hiking trails can take you up and down from the town, but we recommend rideshares or tuk-tuks for an easier time. Just be prepared to haggle your fare slightly.
The National Palace of Pena was built in the 19th century as a romantic summer retreat for King Ferdinand II of Portugal.
Quinta da Regaleira is a stunning estate located in downtown Sintra known for its romantic architecture, mysterious tunnels, and symbolic gardens. It is our favorite historical place to visit in town. Built in the early 20th century by Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a wealthy Portuguese businessman, the estate is deeply influenced by Freemasonry, Templar, and alchemical symbolism. Our favorite feature of the estate is its Initiation Well, a spiral staircase leading deep underground, believed to represent a symbolic journey of rebirth.
