How We Met

Coffee Date or Kidnapping?

Ryan and Sam met in person for the first time on January 2, 2016. They met virtually on the Bumble app a few days before that. Since Bumble requires women to initiate conversation, Sam made the first move. After much discussion over who was better at Mario Kart, they exchanged phone numbers and arranged a coffee date. Despite an accidental butt-dial from Ryan at 2 a.m. on New Year's Day, Sam had high hopes for their first meeting. They met at Erie Island Coffee in Rocky River. Sam doesn't drink coffee. To this day, Ryan doesn't understand why she suggested a coffee date. Before leaving the apartment she shared with Allison, Sam promised to text Allison with updates on how the date was going and Allison promised to be ready to fake an "emergency" that required Sam's immediate help if the date wasn't going well. As soon as Ryan and Sam sat down with their drinks, the conversation flowed easily for hours. Sam couldn't remember the last time it had been so easy to talk to a guy (ask her about some of her first date nightmares) and Ryan loved her sense of humor. After four or five hours, they finally got ready to leave and Sam checked her phone for the first time all day. Allison had been calling and texting to check in and her last text read, "DID YOU DIE." Sam was never seen again. Just kidding. Sam told Allison the date went so well that she didn't even remember to text with updates. Sam and Ryan didn't date anyone else from that day forward and thank the Bumble gods every day for introducing them to each other. Sam loves how kind, patient and supportive Ryan is. Plus, he gets extra bonus points for being a Browns fan (a requirement to be approved by Sam's dad and brother). Ryan loves how smart and funny Sam is. He's also not mad about all the delicious food she makes. Ryan proposed on November 30, 2018 at a cabin in Hocking Hills. Fun fact: they had already booked their wedding venue earlier that month. Neither of them had any doubts about their future together.
