Dutch Flat was founded by two German brothers, Joseph and Charles Dornbach who settled here in 1851 during the California Gold Rush. Residents referred to the Dornbach's camp as 'Dutch Charlie's Flat,' and thus the town was named. During this period many Germans were referred as 'Dutch' as a shorthand for Deutschland. Mining Mining operations at Dutch Flat peaked in the 1870s, with thousands of miners working the surrounding area. Hydraulic mining to reached gold deposits by blasting it out of the hills with high-pressure water cannons. From 1861-1907 lumber was a prominent industry in DF. Chinatown Dutch Flat's Chinatown began in the 1850s. By the late 1860s, it was among the largest Chinese settlements outside of SF. In 1853, Dutch Flat's population was over 50% Chinese (3500 residents). Culture In the 1800s, Dutch Flat had a thriving dramatical society and debating society. Even Mark Twain lectured at the Opera House. DF was also frequently mentioned Bret Harte's works.
