Topanga Canyon is removed enough from the urban core of Los Angeles to have a rustic feel but close enough to be within reach of amenities and rideshare services.
That said, Los Angeles is a big place. We think you’ll enjoy your weekend most if you stay within or near the canyon. A limited number of rooms are available in the canyon at the Topanga Canyon Inn B&B. For an AirBnB or VRBO, we suggest you book early. More hotel rooms are available in the San Fernando Valley. We have reserved a block of rooms at the Anza Hotel in Calabasas, but there are other options around.
We don’t suggest that you stay with your cousin in Silverlake (though we live there and love it), at least not on Saturday night. Even Santa Monica would feel a bit far.

Flight
To LAX or not to LAX?
As for airports, LAX is large with many flights, rental cars, and amenities. Bob Hope Airport (a.k.a. Burbank) is a charming throwback experience (think airstairs and open-air baggage claim)--much mellower than LAX but with fewer flights.
