Topanga State Beach is short, but we’ve always loved it for the convenience.
Topanga Canyon is connected to a chain of parks along the Santa Monica Mountains. A classic hike (4mi RT) with majestic views over the ocean is Eagle Rock. Park at the Trippet Ranch lot of Topanga State Park or on the side of the road outside the parking lot. From there follow signs for Eagle Rock. The trail passes through oak groves and grassy fields before winding uphill to a ridge above the ocean, leading ultimately to a craggy sandstone formation. Given the season, this hike is best in cooler parts of the day.
For the nearest iconic beach blanket, volleyball, bike path, frisbee, bocce, etc. experience go to Will Rogers State Beach. Park in one of the lots or find a free spot on Temescal Canyon Boulevard.
Similar in feel to Will Rogers, but further up the coast.
Point Dume is known and loved for its cliffs and dramatic sweep but is less spacious than the other two and maybe less easy for families.
For an indoor activity, check out the Getty Villa, with its spectacular architecture perched above the ocean and collection of antiquities. For the Villa, you need to make parking reservations in advance. Inland from Topanga Canyon is the Getty Center (tip: you can bring a picnic). No advance reservations required. Admission to both museums is free, aside from your parking fee.
Sticking around for a bit? Maybe catch an outdoor play in the canyon.
Sticking around for longer?? Head to the east side to see our LA: Silverlake, Echo Park, Downtown, Little Tokyo, and the Arts District are all great places to explore.
