Things To Do

First time in the Shoals? Here are some of our favorite spots!
Court Street Books

Court Street Books

610 South Court Street, Florence, AL 35630

If you are exploring the charming downtown area of Florence, make sure to pop into Court Street Books! Located right on South Court Street, this independent, community-focused bookshop is a cozy neighborhood favorite that perfectly embodies the creative, welcoming spirit of the Shoals. The shop is beautifully curated, featuring everything from local history and Southern literature to standard fiction, unique nature studies, and charming little booklets. It is a wonderful space to slow down, browse the shelves, and experience the warmth of a true local business.

Joe Wheeler State Park

Joe Wheeler State Park

4403 McLean Drive, Rogersville, AL 35652

We have spent almost every day in the state park since last Christmas! Be sure to drive through before leaving town! Nestled along the wide, sparkling shores of Wheeler Lake, the Joe Wheeler State Park is a massive 2,550-acre resort destination that perfectly captures the serenity of North Alabama! This park offers a peaceful escape surrounded by towering pines and panoramic waterfront views. At the heart of the park is its rustic stone-and-wood resort lodge, which features private balconies overlooking a stretch of the Tennessee River over a mile wide. It is an incredible spot to watch the sunset, watch boats glide in and out of the full-service marina, or spot the park's local herd of deer.

TVA Rockpile Recreation Area

TVA Rockpile Recreation Area

663 Rock Pile Road, Muscle Shoals, AL 35661

Located right on the banks of the beautiful Tennessee River, the TVA Rockpile Trail area is one of our favorite hidden gems in the Shoals! Built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this scenic spot blends rich local history with stunning natural beauty. It features dramatic stone steps, towering river bluffs, and a beautiful waterfall cascading directly into the river. Standing along the trail offers incredible views of the massive Wilson Dam and the Florence skyline across the water.

Helen Keller Birthplace

Helen Keller Birthplace

300 North Commons Street West, Tuscumbia, AL 35674

For a truly inspiring and unique stop, take a short drive over to Tuscumbia to visit Ivy Green, the historic birthplace and childhood home of Helen Keller! Maintained beautifully as a permanent museum shrine, this 1820s Southern estate offers a deeply moving glimpse into the "Miracle Worker" story right where it actually happened. Guests can tour the main plantation home, the small birthplace cottage, and the beautifully manicured grounds kept up by local Master Gardeners. The property is packed with original Keller family furnishings, books, and mementos. Best of all, you can stand right next to the famous, original outdoor water pump where Helen first learned to communicate with her teacher, Anne Sullivan.
