How We Met

July 28th, 2017

Paul and Rachael met in the most romantic way on good ole Tinder. At the time, Rachael was a poor grad student looking for a free meal, and Paul had just moved back to Charleston to start his new job at Boeing. After a few hangouts—including a fantastic Mexican meal, a dive bar that just happened to be playing “Rocky Top”, meeting each other’s dogs, deep conversations, and Paul introducing Rachael to his true lifelong love, Bojangles—they realized this relationship had the potential to be “the one” and began to get serious. Over the next several years, Paul and Rachael celebrated many wins. Rachael graduated with her master’s degree in Nurse Anesthesia from MUSC and began her career. Paul started a new job that he really enjoys. They adopted two goofy dogs, bought their first home together, and explored new places including—but not limited to—Iceland (ask them sometime about the manual driving skills they learned on the fly there), Germany, Switzerland, Seattle, Las Vegas, and Rachael’s personal favorite: introducing Paul to the magical land of Dollywood. They also faced several challenges together. They mourned the loss of one of Rachael’s heroes—her grandfather Wayne Rucker—followed a year later by the passing of the love of his life, Rachael’s grandmother Evelyn Rucker. They had to say goodbye to both of their original dogs, Max and Zeus, who were with them when they met. They navigated a move to Charlotte, discovered the “joys” of home ownership and maintenance, went through the loss of Paul’s beloved grandfather Waymond Scott, and weathered stressful job changes—all while learning (and relearning) how to grow together and strengthen their relationship. Through it all, Paul and Rachael have constantly been there for each other. Their respect, love, and admiration for one another has only deepened over time. Rachael’s favorite qualities of Paul are his steadfastness, humor, and unwavering optimism. Paul’s favorite qualities of Rachael are her resilience, thoughtfulness, and courage. Paul and Rachael are beyond excited to celebrate with all of their loved ones soon at one of their favorite places!
