If you feel like a hike, you can get a free chairlift back down. Or even head out there and get the chairlift up and back down. The hike is about 1.5 hours, and children need to be over 1m tall to go on the chairlift.
Take a nice drive out to Akaroa. It's 1.5 hours, out to the end of the Banks Peninsula. Great day trip

For those that feel like checking out the North Canterbury vineyards, we highly recommend this one! absolutely beautiful vineyard, with a garden to match. Wine is amazing too.

As far as dining experiences go, if you have some evenings spare, we recommend this Asian fusion experience. It's our "go to" for date nights.
If you have some time and a "couples night away", This is a unique experience.
Canterbury is home to some of the clearest night skies in the world. In fact, about 2 hours from Christchurch (Mackenzie region) hosts the second largest Dark Sky Reserve in the world, once again opening the night sky to residents and visitors alike. There are even hot pools (Tekapo Hot Springs) to soak in while you look skyward.
