Question

What is the time difference?

Answer

Lake Garda is 6 hours ahead of United States Eastern Standard Time.

Question

Where in Italy is Lake Garda?

Answer

Lake Garda extends for more than 50 km (30 miles) from north to south and is divided between three Italian regions (Veneto, Lombardy, Trentino) and three provinces (Verona, Brescia, Trento). The main villages on the eastern coast are no more than half an hour's drive from Verona.

Question

What do I do about cellphone service?

Answer

Start by speaking with your cellphone carrier regarding international plans and fees. If your phone is unlocked, you may also be able to purchase an Italian SIM card when you arrive in Italy and swap your main SIM card to use your phone while you’re traveling. Alternatively, if you keep your phone in airplane mode with the WiFi enabled for your entire trip, you’ll never run the risk of using data if you haven’t gotten an international plan. Your hotel is likely to have WiFi (sometimes free, sometimes not), so you can log in to update social media or check train schedules before you start your sightseeing or when you’re back in your room at day’s end. Some public places have WiFi, too, though it’s not as common in Italy as you might be accustomed to at home. On WiFi you can send iMessages (between two iPhones) or utilize Facebook Messenger, or WhatsApp to message with other people also using those apps.

Question

What forms of payment do we use?

Answer

Since Italy belongs to the Common European Market and European Union, the currency is Euro. We recommend having a credit or a debit card while at Lake Garda, as most hotels, restaurants and shops accept Mastercard or VISA. Check with your bank regarding foreign transaction fees. Most banks in Italy are open Monday to Friday, between 8:30am and 1:30pm and in the afternoon, from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. ATMs accept most debit or credit cards and operate 24/7. We also recommend having some cash with you as well.

Question

I have a passport, am I good?

Answer

Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six months beyond the dates of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met. You are allowed to travel to Italy and to all other members of the Schengen Area as long as your U.S. passport is valid for at least 3 months after your planned return to the United States. We do not recommend pushing your luck. If your passport will expire within 6 months of your return home from Europe, apply for a new one (with plenty of time to get the new one) before you go.

Question

Do you have any travel tips?

Answer

Yes we do. Our biggest suggestions are: 1. Get a power bank to help charge your phone and other devices while traveling. Not every plane or terminal will have outlets for you to charge items. 2. Download shows to your devices from the Netflix app before leaving home. 3. iPhones have different headphone jacks than all other devices. If you want to watch in-flight movies (on plane screens) you will need headphones with a traditional headphone jack. Your plane will most likely have pairs for you, but I always like to bring my own just in case. 4. Invest in a firm neck pillow. The firmer, the better. 5. If still a requirement, have extra masks. Some are more comfortable than others. Investing in one that goes around your whole head and not just behind your ears may keep you more comfortable. 6. Only drink bottled or canned beverages on the plane.

Question

Will my chargers work?

Answer

No. Do not just rely on your chargers. Both the outlet shapes and voltage will be different. In Italy the standard voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. You cannot use your electric appliances in Italy without a voltage converter, because the standard voltage in Italy (230 V) is higher than in the United States of America (120 V). Converters can be purchased cheaply on Amazon and other stores. Bring a couple in case you need to plug in multiple things at once (phone, laptop, curling iron, etc.).

Question

How are you traveling with your wedding clothes?

Answer

We highly recommend keeping your wedding-day outfit (and some other essentials) in your carry-on luggage. If for some reason your checked bag is delayed or lost you will still have those items with you. Some planes also have coat closets where you could have something in a garment bag. Just check with your airline before you book to see if your flight will offer the closet and whether that garment bag has to count as a carry-on.

Question

Any tips for tracking flights?

Answer

Every airline has its own app that you can use to track its flights. iPhone users can also track flights in the Messages app. All you need to do is send (or have someone send you) the flight number in the Messages app. Then, you’ll notice that the flight number will be underlined, like a link. Tap it, or click it if you’re using the app on your Mac, and you’ll be shown two options: either copy the number or track flight. Press track flight. Once you tap this option, your phone or computer will open your flight details. If it’s already in the air, you’ll see how far along the flight is in its journey. If not, you can see if it’s still on time.
