Question

How do I use my phone in Greece?

Answer

1. Add an international plan: Most U.S. carriers (like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) offer daily international plans (usually around $10 or $12/day) so you can use your phone just like at home. 2. Buy a local SIM card or eSIM: If your phone is unlocked, you can get a Greek SIM card or download an eSIM (with apps like Airalo). It’s usually cheaper for longer stays. 3.Use Wi-Fi only (not recommended if needing to use GPS) Keep your phone on Airplane Mode and use Wi-Fi at hotels or cafes. Pro Tip:Use apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, or FaceTime to call and text over Wi-Fi. Recommendation: Before traveling, call your phone company to see what’s available and make sure your phone is unlocked if you want to use a local SIM card.

Question

What’s an eSIM?

Answer

An eSIM is a digital SIM card you can install directly on your phone — no need to swap physical SIM cards. Perfect for international travel! These eSIM providers are popular, easy to use, and work well in Greece: Airalo – Affordable and reliable. Great for short trips. https://www.airalo.com Holafly – Offers unlimited data options. https://www.holafly.com Simly – Flexible plans with good coverage. https://www.simlystore.com/shop/greece-esim-en/?utm_source=chatgpt.com ESIM.net – Includes voice and SMS options, if needed. https://www.esim.net/esim-greece?utm_source=chatgpt.com Nomad – Competitive pricing and user-friendly app. https://www.getnomad.app/ Important: Make sure your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible (most newer iPhones and Androids are). You can usually activate the eSIM before your flight and it’ll start working when you land. Stay Connected: Most eSIMs are data-only, so we recommend using apps like WhatsApp or iMessage for texts & calls. FaceTime, Zoom, or Google Meet for video calls You’ll be able to access maps, check reservations, share photos, and stay in touch with fellow guests.

Question

Can I download maps ahead of time to use without Wi-Fi or data?

Answer

Yes! You can download maps on your phone before your trip so you can still use GPS even without an internet connection. Most travelers use Google Maps for this. It works great in Greece and is free. How to do it: Open the Google Maps app. Search for a city or area (like “Heraklion”). Tap your profile icon > Offline maps > Select your own map. Choose the area you want and tap Download. You can zoom in or out to download an entire route. This way, you can still see your location, get directions, and explore—even if you're in airplane mode or have no signal.
