India, to some extent, is a cash economy. So we would advise keeping some minimum amount of currency always (at least INR 5,000). There are two quick options to get INR (Indian Rupees): (i) Withdraw it at the ATM - that is the option we personally prefer and we think it is the most hassle free (might charge a small conversion fee though) (ii) Exchange at the Delhi/ Mumbai/ Kolkata airport via currency exchange shops PS: We wouldn't suggest exchanging at shops in cities as not all the shops are genuine.
You can wear anything you want, no pressure from our end. But should you want to wear traditional Indian attire: Women A) Kurtis (Indian tunics!) or salwaar kameez - Please carry a set of tights to wear underneath the tunic (non-sheer) B) Sarees - If you opt for sarees, there are a couple of prerequisites. You should buy a tank top (asap) to wear on top, a petticoat or a straight fit maxi skirt. and keep a bunch of safety pins to make all the tucks needed. Some of our family members will definitely help you put it on. But please be sure to carry the aforementioned in order to make the outfit come together. Men Kurta with Pajama (long Indian style tunic) or Kurta with Dhoti In order to buy the above, we would recommend any Fabindia outlet across India.
