We met online, thanks to a bit of accidental geography—Allie thought Hillsborough, NC was Hillsborough Street in Raleigh. (In her defense, they sound like they should be closer than an hour apart.) But the stars aligned, she swiped right anyway, and a few messages later we made plans to meet for coffee and breakfast sandwiches. After coffee, we went for a hike—and found we could walk and talk for hours. On a whim, Allie suggested finding a nearby geocache. Jay had no idea what that was, but he was game, and we ended up finding three that day. The first one held two identical feather pendants—one gold, one silver. We each kept one, and we still have them. Somewhere between the bagel and the third geocache, Allie shared something unexpected, and Jay’s response—equal parts laugh and mock outrage—was, “I hate you.” Somehow, it felt just right.
