Austin is Derek's oldest brother, separated by only 5 years apart, and often referred to as twins by strangers. One time, a coworker of Derek's was visiting Francis Tuttle Votech in Oklahoma City and thought he saw Derek and wondered why he wasn't at work and went up to scare him and low and behold, it was Austin as they both were startled and surprised.

Derek met Shane while working at ONEsite together. As punishment for arriving to work late, the company owner sent Derek down to the downstairs datacenter/dungeon to work for the WebHero hosting division where Shane was a CSR/support rep who expressed interest in getting into web development and had been working hard to prove himself. Derek was assigned to work with Shane on building new pages for the site and would build a lot of common interests from working closely on that project. They would enjoy many late nights at the office working hard on client website projects and even go out for the occasional after work alcoholic beverage and discuss work and personal life goals and challenges.
