Hotel
As you cannot stay at the wedding venue, nor is there much to do there, we recommend staying in/around Lisbon to make the most of the weekend. That's what we, and our families, will be doing. The city has many great hotels at various price point, and its districts are well connected via public transport and Uber. If you're looking for an area to stay, here are some which we've enjoyed spending time in: 1. Rua Augusta; 2. Rossio Square; 3. Avenue da Liberdade. Below is a link to the Browns Hotel Group which has a series of options near Rua Augusta.
Flight
Except for the fortunate few, most of our guests will be flying into Lisbon. There are direct flights from Dubai, Dulles, and Dublin. Download taxi apps Uber or Bolt before you leave, as this will be the easiest (and cheapest) way to get from the airport.
Rental Car
The weekend festivities should not need a rental car, but if you would prefer it over Uber, or want to see nearby towns, there are plenty of affordable options. Rental cars can be acquired for under 15 Euros a day. Please note parking in Lisbon itself can be challenging; street parking is limited and parking overnight can be more expensive than the rental. Also check if your rental car is an automatic or manual before purchasing if that is a factor for you.
Train
Public transit to navigate Lisbon is an easy way to avoid those famous hills. There's trams, a metro, and trains all of which are cheap and reliable. You don't need a ticket; you can tap and go with your credit card, Apple Pay etc. Download the Citymapper app before you go and enjoy exploring.
Travel Note
For guests who may not travel abroad often, there is an easy / cheap way to use your phone abroad without overpaying for roaming. Download the Airalo app, pick Portugal and how much data you want for your time there, and then download your new electronic SIM card. If it's your first time using it, here's a code for $3 off your purchase (which might be nearly the full cost of your purchase): PHIL8054
Travel Note
*Update* the visa program for US and UK citizens to enter Portugal has been postponed. No visa will be needed if you've got a UK or US passport.
