Airbnb is normally our choice for the value you get and ability to stay in some more residential areas. Some of the best spots book early though, so nab one when you can. Neighborhoods we recommend: lower Lawrenceville, Shadyside, the Strip District, the North Side, East Liberty, or the Southside Flats. Check out the link for a list we made with some recs.

The airport is 18 miles from downtown. Getting to town from the airport: - Bus: the 28x Airport flyer picks up every 30 mins at the main lower level passenger pickup area by door 6. Have $2.75 cash ready, no change. The bus stops at many locations downtown and in Oakland. https://www.portauthority.org/pdfs/28X.pdf - Car: 20-40 mins depending on traffic. Several car rental companies available directly at the airport. Uber/Lyft available as well. See notes below for updates on choosing the best travel option.
Travel Note
Unfortunately the US is currently experiencing a nation-wide rental car shortage as companies struggle to replenish their fleets this year. Prices are 2-4x normal rates. Please be aware and check rates early! Uber and Lyft rides are usually plentiful. As demand is starting to increase this summer however, we are seeing price surges more often. We're hoping by August this will normalize. Pro Tip: schedule your ride 60 mins in advance or further for a better rate and to lock in the price! For those arriving to the airport from out of town, please keep in touch with Phil & Steph as we'd really love to coordinate a few airport pickups and carpooling situations to keep costs lower for folks!
Travel Note
Pittsburgh is a driver-friendly city with low-cost metered street parking and lots in most neighborhoods. Almost everywhere is free after 6pm. Be prepared to parallel park and pay attention to signs. Downtown may require parking in a garage. Check your hotel or airbnb for parking information- most hotels do charge a parking fee.
