How We Met

01/06/2020: Stanford, CA

We met at Stanford during our sophomore year on the first day of winter quarter in a class called CS110: Principles of Computer Systems. Briana sat with the only person she knew in the class, Nick, who turned out to have a friend named Peter also in the class. Mr. Tall (6'6") and Mysterious (actually just quiet), Peter arrived a few minutes late and took a seat in the row in front of her. Since this class was required only for computer science majors and he was a math major, Briana asked, "Why are you in this class?" When he replied, "For fun," she was sold. She quickly created a group chat and got them to join the same section. Meanwhile, he was feeling incredibly lucky how everything was working out so well. Soon after, she started messaging Peter individually to work on problem sets (PSETs) and invited him to a social dance event to learn cross-step waltz. They waltzed, had fun, and maybe even tripped over each other's feet once or twice. They began sitting next to each other in class, shoulder to shoulder. Instead of making a classic move by putting his arm around her, Peter slid into her terminal DMs while they were both on the same shared remote computer cluster. Eventually, after they completed a terminal shell project and faced their 110 midterm, Peter took Briana to dinner at Crepevine in Palo Alto, where he asked her to be his girlfriend, and the rest is history.

The Proposal

08/08/2024: Mont St. Michel, Normandy, France

In classic math major fashion, Peter, inspired by the unexpected hanging paradox, planned to propose to Briana during their post-Olympics vacation. While Briana organized their first half in Mont St. Michel, Peter arranged the second half in the South of France. According to the paradox, the proposal would have to happen on the first day. He advised Briana to “pretend you’re getting proposed to every day,” leading her to believe the proposal would come later in the trip. Upon arriving in Mont St. Michel after a long train ride and hauling their luggage up a cobblestone hill, they took a two-hour nap. Unbeknownst, Peter practiced his proposal speech while she slept. When Briana woke up, Peter jokingly mentioned a dinner reservation, which she assumed was part of the “pretend proposal” routine. After a lighthearted exchange about needing 45 minutes to get ready, Briana jokingly suggested he text the photographer that they will be late 15 minutes. Turns out, he actually did. As they walked toward the restaurant, Peter acted strangely and asked her to switch into her heels. Spotting a photographer, Briana began to realize something was up. When Peter pulled her aside, she asked, "Is this actually happening?" still unsure if this was part of the "pretend proposal" routine. He quickly responded with, "Yes," turned her around, got down on one knee, delivered his speech, and asked the age-old question, “Will you marry me?” The answer, as you know, was a resounding yes, followed by cheers from those around them.
