Durango - La Plata County Airport (DRO) is our go-to airport. It’s the closest option, just about 45 minutes from Echo Basin. It's small, easy to navigate, and much less hectic than major hubs. You'll fly in on American Airlines or United, with nonstop service to Denver (DEN), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), and Phoenix (PHX). Since it’s a smaller regional airport, flights can be a bit pricier than larger hubs – mainly due to limited routes, fewer daily flights, and higher operating costs. The upside is convenience: shorter wait times, quick baggage claim, and less stress all around. If you want more flight options and lower prices, check Albuquerque or Montrose.

Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) is the nearest major airport, about a 4-hour drive to Echo Basin. Unlike Durango, ABQ is a large hub with tons of flight options and airlines, including budget carriers like Southwest. Frontier, and Spirit, plus all the majors (American, United, Delta, Alaska, JetBlue). Because of the competition and higher volume, flights are usually much cheaper than into Durango. The airport itself is easy to navigate, with plenty of rental car options right on site. Many guests choose ABQ for the savings, even though it adds a road trip, and the drive north into Colorado is beautiful.
Flight
Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) is about a 2.5-hour drive to Echo Basin. It’s a small but busy mountain-town airport, often used for ski country travelers. You’ll find seasonal direct flights from larger hubs like Denver, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, and Chicago, with United, American, and Southwest among the main carriers. Flights can be more expensive than Albuquerque but often cheaper than Durango, depending on the season. Rental cars are available right at the airport, and the drive into Southwest Colorado is scenic, taking you through mountain passes and wide-open valleys. It’s a great middle-ground option if you want convenience without the higher prices of Durango.
