Middleburg, Virginia is a charming Southern destination known as The Nation’s Horse and Hunt Capital. Set against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Middleburg offers the best of small-town America: local art museums, historic landmarks, fine cuisine, and one-of-a-kind antiques. The town was established in 1787 by Revolutionary War officer and statesman Leven Powell. He purchased the land for Middleburg at $2.50 per acre in 1763 from Joseph Chinn, a first cousin of George Washington. In 1863, Middleburg witnessed two skirmishes during the Gettysburg campaign of the Civil War.
Explore two huge hangars, filled with iconic objects from aviation and space history. The museum features the Space Shuttle Discovery, the B-29 Superfortress "Enola Gay", the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, and the Air France Concorde, alongside numerous rare German WWII aircraft, early experimental planes, and significant artifacts like the Goddard Rocket. You can spot memorabilia from Catherine's work here, via Orbital Sciences Corporation and Northrop Grumman.
For history fans, see the location of the Battle of Middleburg. The crest of the hill, known today as Mount Defiance, was the key to the Southern position on June 19, 1863. The Red Fox was used as a field hospital and headquarters throughout the Gettysburg campaign. Additionally, see the similarly named Mt. Defiance Cidery & Distillery along E. Washington St
See the monuments, walk the halls of free Smithsonian museums, paddle on the Potomac and Anacostia rivers or sit back on a double-decker tour bus and soak up some history. Roughly 1 hour drive from Middleburg, checking out the Nation's Capital is feasible on this trip. The Dulles Airport (IDA) and surrounding hotels are accessible by the Metro along the Silver line, which takes you on a direct path to the National Mall monuments and Smithsonian museums (roughly 45 minute-1 hour metro ride, depending on stop). This makes the Dulles hotels the perfect home-base for a trip to DC.
