Flights to Portugal

While it may be an ocean away, getting to Portugal is fairly easy from the United States - it is the closest part of Europe to the east coast. You can expect an approximately 5 hour flight from the New York area to Portugal. There are many direct flights from New York and elsewhere in the US to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal and the country's largest airport. The closest airport to the wedding celebrations is Faro International Airport. If you are arriving in Lisbon first, flights are available from Lisbon to Faro - this is an approximately 30 minute flight. If you find yourself elsewhere in Europe prior to the celebrations, most major airports across the continent offer direct service to Faro International Airport given the Algarve is a major summer holiday destination for Europeans.

This hotel is located in Tavira, near where the Welcome Party and Pre-Wedding Celebration will occur (the grooms are staying at the location of the pre-wedding celebration). The hotel is located in an old school and provides you the ability to walk around the quaint town of Tavira in the more rustic eastern Algarve. The beach is only about a mile away as well! Rental Car

Renting Cars in Portugal

The Algarve region is beautiful and most easily explored by car. Rental cars are available at both Lisbon International Airport and Faro International Airport upon arrival. Luckily Portugal also car rental rates significantly lower than the US. If you do fly into Lisbon, renting a car also affords you the ability to explore Portugal further and see the natural beauty of the Alentejo. This region separates the Algarve from the capital, and there are even many clearly marked sites of interest along the A2 motorway. Please note that the drive from Lisbon International Airport to Faro is approximately 2.5 hours. Many rental car companies you find in the US are available in Portugal. Based on ratings within Portugal we would suggest Avis or Sixt - please feel free to explore rates using the Expedia link here.

Train

Trains to the Algarve (if coming from Lisbon)

If you arrive to Portugal through Lisbon, you can easily get a train to Faro and can expect about a 2-3 hour train ride. If arriving at Lisbon International Airport, nearby you can catch a direct train from Lisboa-Oriente Station. Please see the link here to buy train tickets within Portugal.

For those staying at Palacio de Estoi or in the Faro area, one shuttle will be running to and from the Pre-Wedding Celebration at ONLY the specified times: - Departure from Palacio de Estoi to event: 6:15 PM promptly - Return from event to Palacio de Estoi: 1:00 AM The shuttle will leave promptly at 6:15 PM for the event so we ask that those expected on the shuttle please ensure they are on time. It is expected to pick up in the front entrance area. We have reached out to those expected on the shuttle but if you are interested in additional information please reach out and confirm with us.

Tavira Area Bus to Wedding

A bus will be providing transportation from 4 select hotels/stops in the Tavira area where guests are staying to and from the wedding ceremony and reception. The bus will ONLY make the following pick ups/drops to and from the wedding. The times listed are the SPECIFIED pick up times at each stop: Casas de Quinta de Cima - 4:30 PM Pensão Agricola - 4:50 PM Hospedaria - 5:00 PM Colégio Charm House - 5.20 PM We ask that you ensure you are at the stop on time to not miss the bus to the wedding. Please note: for those of you staying in Tavira town center, we recommend meeting the bus at Colegio Charm House.

Uber in the Algarve

Ubers are readily available in the Algarve and generally will be to you within 15 minutes. Once you are settled it should be fairly easy to find Ubers to explore the area between scheduled events. They also use another rideshare app known as Bolt frequently in Portugal - this also represents another option for you.

Euros and ATMs in Portugal

During high season in the Algarve, it is helpful to have some Euros on hand for small purchases, whether snacks or even a beach chairs. Most places do take credit card but some vendors will not. If you do need to take out Euros, please note that there is a national law in Portugal limiting withdrawals to 400 Euros a day. We would also suggest you specifically look for a "Multibanco" ATM - these are nationally regulated and should help you avoid exorbitant fees and the worst conversion rates.
