Things To Do

These are some of our favorite places in the city, where Patti was born and raised, starting with our favorite parks and views. Scroll down for our favorite museums, followed by a few recommendations for longer daytrips, and lastly our favorite places to eat and experience the culture. Also remember to not leave any belongings visible in your car, especially in tourist areas (downtown, fisherman's wharf, near SFO, etc).
Land's End Trail

Land's End Trail

Lands End Trail, San Francisco, CA 94121

A family favorite. Beautiful views of Sutro Baths, the Bay, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks

501 Twin Peaks Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94114

Some of the best views in the city! Micah and Patti went here the very first day they met (see picture of Patti, Micah, and his cousins) back in the summer after their freshman year of high school.

Bernal Heights

Bernal Heights

Bernal Heights Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94110

Another place with amazing views of the city. Also where Patti and Micah had their first date, a few days before officially becoming a couple! You can see Patti's high school, Burton, from the backside. Checkout local coffee and food on Cortland St.

Fort Funston

Fort Funston

Fort Funston Road, San Francisco, CA 94132

Clifftop trail and beaches. But be ready for wind and many (many!) dogwalkers.

Palace of Fine Arts

Palace of Fine Arts

3601 Lyon Street, San Francisco, CA 94123

Old favorite where Patti took prom photos. Also recommend stopping by Crissy Fields and walking over to Fort Point for beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Golden Gate Park & the Bison Paddock

Golden Gate Park & the Bison Paddock

1237 John F Kennedy Drive, San Francisco, CA 94121

Everywhere in Golden Gate Park is wonderful. Stop by this area to see some real life bison, who were brought here to combat extinction. This is where Patti ran cross country meets in high school and took her first art classes as a little kid. To get food nearby, we recommend going to Irving St.

Favorite museum: the Exploratorium

Favorite museum: the Exploratorium

Green Street, San Francisco, CA 94111

A unique science museum with lots of hands-on experiments. Micah and Patti have gone here with friends, and Patti has many memories of visiting as a kid with her family, friends, and especially her grandparents. The museum is close to Pier 39 and the Ferry Building.

Favorite Museum: California Academy of Sciences

Favorite Museum: California Academy of Sciences

55 Music Concourse Drive, San Francisco, CA 94118

One of Patti's favorite museums in the city. Huge museum with a lot of fun for all ages. Make sure you don't miss the aquarium downstairs with Patti's favorite, the spotted garden eels. The museum is located in the Music Concourse of Golden Gate Park, near the Japanese Tea Gardens and the DeYoung. Patti performed here many times with her high school marching band.

favorite art museum: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

favorite art museum: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

151 3rd Street, San Francisco, CA 94103

Patti used to stop by here nearly every week before work in high school. Also one of the couple's memorable date spots. There's always some unique contemporary artists on view on the sixth floor, as well as the museums main collection with some great Calder mobiles, Julie Mehretu murals, and sometimes - Patti's favorite - Louise Bourgeois' maman spiders.

day trip: Angel Island

day trip: Angel Island

Tiburon, CA 94920

A bigger trip, involving a ferry across the bay. See cool views, go on hikes, and visit the Angel Island Immigration Station to learn about the history of immigration to the west coast, including the detention, interrogation, and Chinese (and other Asian) exclusion.

day trip: Marin Headlands

day trip: Marin Headlands

Parking lot, Black Sands Beach Trail, Mill Valley, CA 94941

Head across the Golden Gate to see the city from the other side, with beautiful views, hikes, and birdwatching. Patti used to go here every month in middle school for her environmental club, and it was the first place she saw her favorite bird - the peregrine falcon.

food: Spark Social SF

food: Spark Social SF

601 Mission Bay Boulevard North, San Francisco, CA 94158

A group of food trucks, with nice places to sit in a part of the city that's actually sunny (well, usually). Try Filipino food at one of San Francisco's most famous food trucks, Senor Sisig.

food & culture: Irving Street

food & culture: Irving Street

Irving Street, San Francisco, CA 94122

Many Asian restaurants, cafes, and bakeries. Good place to go if you're visiting Golden Gate Park. (On the north side of the park, check out Clement St.)

food & culture: Na Ya Dessert Cafe and Clement St

food & culture: Na Ya Dessert Cafe and Clement St

5338 Geary Boulevard, San Francisco, CA 94121

One of Patti's favorite Asian dessert cafes. Highly recommend going a block north and checking out Clement St, where there are great Chinese food and shops. There is also a location on Octavia St. near Civic Center.

food & culture: Taqueria El Farolito & Patti's beloved neighborhood, the Excelsior

food & culture: Taqueria El Farolito & Patti's beloved neighborhood, the Excelsior

4817 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94112

Right around the corner from where Patti was born and raised, Mission St is the place to go if you want to experience the place that makes her who she is. El Farolito is her top taqueria recommendation (go across the street to Guadalajara for burritos). She also recommends the panaderia, Pacitas Salvadorian Bakery on Mission and Persia (taste of her childhood), Mr. T for boba (taste of middle school and high school), An Chi for Vietnamese food (taste of young adulthood), and Good Orchard for Chinese buns (taste of her whole life, you could say).

food & culture: The mission district

food & culture: The mission district

2884 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110,

This is where Patti took dance as a kid (at the Mission Cultural Center) and frequently visited for the food, murals, and community.

food & culture: Chinatown

food & culture: Chinatown

745 Kearny St, San Francisco, CA, 94108

You can't go to San Francisco and not go to Chinatown. There's so much history here, including the founding of Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the grandmother church of Patti's Redeemer Community Church. Lots of places to eat and shop. We recommend stopping by the Chinese Historical Society of America Museum.
