Our story began in 2023 at a Krav Maga gym—arguably the most intense (and unconventional) place to meet someone. Pat was a longtime member and instructor; Helen had just joined, nervously stepping into her first class hoping to learn some self-defense skills. (Fun fact: Helen was inspired to explore Krav Maga after reading "The Home Game" by Odette Stone. Reading ftw.) At first, Helen was too focused on not getting kicked in the face to notice anyone, especially the calm, confident instructor in the corner. Pat, on the other hand, definitely noticed Helen—but chose not to approach her, letting time (and a lot of roundhouse kicks) do the work. For about a year, we were nothing more than familiar faces in the same classes. No sparks. Just sweat, bruises, and nods of mutual exhaustion. But eventually, we started hanging out outside of the gym—casual at first, until one particular night out dancing. In a very graceful moment, Helen tripped and fell… directly into Pat’s face. Somehow, that clumsy collision sparked something real. From that moment on, things just clicked. We quickly realized we shared a love for travel, exploring new restaurants, being near the ocean, and, of course, Krav Maga. What started with kicks and punches turned into laughter, deep conversations, and a partnership built on both strength and softness.
It was supposed to be just another Disneyland date night — one of our favorite traditions as annual passholders. But this night turned out to be the most magical one yet. Pat had been secretly carrying around the ring without a box for a whole week, nervously waiting for the right moment to pop the question. When the day finally came, Helen had no idea what was coming. In fact, she showed up completely unprepared for a life-changing moment — no makeup, no hair done, just her natural self ready for a casual night at the park. Right in front of Disneyland, Pat (still recovering from a dislocated ankle and balancing on his boot and crutches) asked Helen to marry him with the ring they had designed together. Helen was completely shocked — and both of them cried happy tears as she said yes! It was funny, imperfect, emotional, and absolutely perfect — our own kind of fairytale.
