Question

What is the Yoruba Engagement Ceremony?

Answer

Let's start with... Who can attend the Engagement ceremony? The Yoruba Engagement ceremony is usually a bit more intimate of a gathering of immediate family so don’t be offended if you don’t make the final cut. The event starts at 12:00pm at Kim Sing Theater. When you scan the RSVP QR Code, if you have the option to RSVP for the event, then you are invited. If not, we will see you at 4:00 pm for the western Wedding Ceremony. What is the Yoruba Engagement Ceremony? Wait, I thought the bride was Nigerian. The bride is Nigerian, however, she is from the Yoruba tribe. Quick history lesson - there are 3 main tribes that make up Nigeria: Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa. This also means that the bride does not speak Nigerian, she speaks Yoruba. Ok, now that we have cleared that up let's get back to the main question........ The Yoruba engagement ceremony essentially is the groom’s public declaration for his intention to marry. He enters with his groomsmen and family to formally ask the bride's family for her hand in marriage and their blessing. Afterward, the bride follows with her own bridesmaids and similarly asks for a blessing from both the bride and groom’s families. There will be prayers, laughter, dancing, tears, and there will be food. Let’s Talk Outfits. Traditional Nigerian outfits are typically made by hand and the families of the groom and bride are dressed in a specific color. Vinny's side of the family will be in Purple and Olayinka's side of the family will be in White. If you are invited to this special event, this does not mean that you need to go out and buy a purple suit. Although, if you can pull it off, we want to see it! This just means to incorporate some elements of the color in your outfit for the ceremony.

Question

Do you have any hotel recommendations?

Answer

Yes, please see the Travel page on our website for hotel recommendations and discounted rates.

Question

Is there parking for the ceremony or reception?

Answer

The wedding ceremony and reception are all in one location in Downtown Los Angeles. Paid parking near the venue is limited. We highly recommend taking Uber or Lyft from your hotel to the venue for both your convenience and safety. We want you to be able to enjoy the open bar fully.

Question

Money Spraying/Dancing, what is that?

Answer

This is a wedding tradition across multiple cultures and specifically celebrated by the Yoruba people. Money spraying symbolizes a showering of happiness, good fortune, and a display of the guest's affection for the couple. It also provides an opportunity for you to interact with the bride and groom. Bring your singles and large bills to make it rain on the bride and groom.

Question

Are you registered? Where?

Answer

Yes, please visit the Registry page. First and foremost, we want to thank you for your generosity. As much as we'd love linens and dinnerware, we have been abundantly blessed over the years and have acquired all of the things to furnish our home. We, instead are dedicating our registry to fund our next big adventure together as husband and wife. If you're able, you can contribute as much or as little as you can. And if not, your presence on our wedding day is enough.

Question

Is there a dress code?

Answer

The dress code is formal attire.
