Our story is one of serendipity—right place, right time, and just the right amount of nosiness. While it sounds cheesy (and honestly, it kind of is), everything just clicked. But if you ask each of us how we met, you’ll hear two completely different tales. Let’s spare you the debate and stick to the highlights. Bobby was a supervisor for a role Kiana had recently been promoted to. Meanwhile, one of Kiana’s friends, Bri, had just applied for the same department. During her training, Kiana would pass Bobby’s desk daily, not-so-subtly fishing for updates on Bri’s application status. Why? Because Bobby knew and worked with her brother for quite some time, and Kiana figured she could milk that connection for intel. What started as “Hey, have you heard if Bri’s getting an interview yet?” soon turned into “Are those your kids?” (pointing to his desktop background) and other slightly more personal conversations. Fast-forward a bit: Bri did get the interview—and the job—but not before pulling some Cupid-level strings. She threw Bobby and Kiana into a group chat and texted Bobby separately: “You’re welcome 😉. Now it’s your turn.” A week later, we went on our first date. At 6:30 PM, we met at Zipps Sports Grill, planning for a quick get-to-know-you dinner. What was supposed to be a two-hour date, since Bobby had to catch 6AM flight the following morning, turned into us losing track of time and closing down the bar after hours of laughter, stories, and realizing just how much we clicked. While we had spent all night together, it felt as if it flew by. When we said goodbye that night we both knew that we had gone on our last first date. Since that date, not a single day has gone by without us talking. So, how did we meet? Chance? Fate? A setup? Honestly, all of the above—and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
From the moment I met Kiana, I knew she was the one I wanted to spend my life with. About nine months into our relationship, I decided it was time to take the next step. But first, I needed the approval of her biggest fans—Brooklyn and Alex. Their excitement was an understatement (though I made them promise to keep it a secret!). I then reached out to my mom and Kiana’s mom, Joanna, to ask for her blessing. Joanna gave it wholeheartedly, though not without a warning: "If you ever hurt her, I will kill you". I don't intend on testing her on that warning as she has a lot of open desert land in New Mexico oilfield country! In April 2023, one year into our relationship, we had a trip to Cabo planned with family and friends. I knew it was where I wanted to pop the question. After some serious Pinterest stalking to design the ring of her dreams, I worked with a jeweler to bring my vision to life. Keeping the ring a secret on the trip—especially through airport security—was a challenge, but I pulled it off with the help of my mom. On April 2, 2023, as the sun set over the beach in Cabo, it was time. Though I had hoped to propose with her mom present, timing didn’t align. Instead, my mom stepped away to quietly FaceTime Joanna so she could be part of the moment. With the perfect backdrop of waves and sunset, I got down on one knee (holding the ring so tightly over the sand!) and asked Kiana to marry me. Her reaction and response was not what I expected, with a shocked look on her face, she held up a finger and wagged it at me she "No, no, no, no—you aren’t serious! Is this real?" Nervously laughing, I reassured her that it was indeed real and asked again. That’s when the tears came. She bent down, held my face so tightly, and said, "Yes, of course I’ll marry you!" I said I love you Ki, but I need you to let go of me and my face so I can put this ring on your finger before I drop it in the sand, laughing she stands up and I slid it on. Then, as she is looking at the ring on her finger for the first time, I told her to say hi to her mom, who was watching the whole moment unfold on FaceTime. While I had been planning this proposal for months, and knew everything I wanted to say, I had forgotten all of it in that moment, but it was everything I had hoped for—surrounded by our family and friends, heartfelt, filled with love but not without our humor. A moment we’ll remember and cherish forever.
