Exploring Ireland

Borris – history and fun facts The town of Borris (pronounced more like 'Burrus' than Borris Johnson) is an idyllic little village located in the inland county of Carlow, in the sunny south east of Ireland. The name An Bhurios in Irish translates to the medieval English word ‘burgage’, meaning a town or borough owned by a king or lord. The owner kings in this case were the MacMurrough family, who were the Kings of Leinster going back over 1,000 years. The MacMurrough-Cavanagh family still lives at Borris House itself, which dates from the early 1700s. Borris rests on the scenic River Barrow (good for grassy walks on towpaths and kayaking) and is hugged by the beautiful Blackstairs Mountains (full of ecotrails, good for hiking or appreciating from afar with a drink in hand!). Borris hosts a famous Literary Festival every year, which The Telegraph voted in the “Top 5 such festivals in the world in 2019”.

St Lazarian's Cathedral

Oldleighlin, CW, Ireland

The Present St. Laserians Cathedral is a 13th century building of great charm. It replaced a 7th century monastery which once accommodated 1,500 monks. This site was the location for a church synod in 630 AD. This historic gathering decided on formula which was to determine the dates of Easter each year for all of the western Church and which remains in use to this day. Nearby is the very ancient 7th century Cross of Saint Laserian and his holy well, which continues to be venerated and attracts votive offerings some 14th centuries after his death.
