This is mostly personal preference and depends on how long you plan on staying in Italy/where else in Italy you want to go! Flights into Rome are typically cheaper than flying into Naples and there will be the most options when it comes to direct flights. However, Naples is much closer to Sorrento if you don't have the extra time to spend a few days in Rome. Occasionally, flights into Milan will be cheaper than flying into Rome. This could be an option if you're interested in seeing Milan, Lake Como, or northern Italy! Typically, flights in and around Italy/Europe are pretty cheap so this option could work depending on your itinerary!
I would imagine that many people had this thought when they received our save-the-date! Sorrento is located south of Naples, Italy and there are a number of different ways to get there. This is a great resource that covers all of the ways to get to Sorrento from both Naples and Rome: https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/getting-to-sorrento-italy Robbie and I are planning to spend a few days in Rome before heading to Sorrento. If we have enough people traveling on a similar schedule as us, we will be looking into booking a bus to take us directly there!
Sorrento is a great home-base for exploring the Amalfi coast and surrounding area! Capri, Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast all make for great day-trips. If staying in town, there are beaches, walking tours, beautiful churches, and great dining options. Sorrento is the perfect place for our wedding for a number of reasons, but mainly because: -Robbie's beloved Pop-Pop's father was born in Sorrento! -Mary's grandfather's family is also from Italy, and it holds a very special place in her and her mom's hearts. -The food and scenery in this part of Italy is some of the best in the world. -Mary loves Italy, studied abroad there, and visits every year with her mom! -We love to travel and take trips every chance we can get - the idea of being in the most beautiful country with the most amazing food and so many of our family and friends sounded like an absolute dream that we couldn't pass up.
I usually find the best time to book flights is about 4-6 months ahead of your planned departure. We will also be looking into getting a group rate discount for flights, which if we can secure, we will let everyone know about! For hotels and accommodations, it is never too early to book something with a flexible cancelation policy :) NOT because we want you to cancel your plans, but just in case you find a better deal later on. Our wedding venue has two sister properties with discount codes for our guests, but we are also looking at additional options to accommodate various budgets and tastes. July is high season for tourism in Italy so booking accommodations early is recommended!
We will continue to monitor the situation and keep a pulse on changing recommendations and regulations from the CDC, EU, and Italy. Currently, to enter Italy you must be vaccinated and present a viral covid test taken no more than one day before travel.
