Kaaterskill Falls

The hike to Kaaterskill Falls is 1.4 miles roundtrip. Tips at Kaaterskill Falls Parking is available at the Mountain Top Historical Society or North South Lake State Campground, follow signage on county route 18 Only follow the marked trail signs. You may see other trails veering off into the forest or away from the main trail, but, for your own safety, do not follow these. Taking shortcuts can lead to erosion on trails, and getting lost or injured. Do not climb on the rocks under or around the waterfall. Injuries are common in areas where the rock or ground is slick. Wear sturdy shoes for hikes. Do not wear sandals, flip flops, or have bare feet. We highly discourage swimming. If you carry it in, carry it out. There is a $250 fine for littering in the Catskills. No glass allowed. Do not light a campfire. New York State trail markers designate the Kaaterskill Falls as part of the Forest Preserve protected by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Mountain Top Arboretum is a public garden in the Catskill Mountains dedicated to displaying and managing native plant communities of the northeastern U.S., in addition to curating its collection of cold-hardy native and exotic trees. Its mountain top elevation of 2,400 feet at the top of the New York City Watershed creates a unique environment for education, research and pure enjoyment of the spectacular and historic Catskills landscape. The Arboretum trails and boardwalks connect 200 acres of plant collections, natural meadows, wetlands, forest and Devonian bedrock—a natural sanctuary for visitors interested in horticulture, birding, geology, local craftsmanship, hiking and snowshoeing!

North-South Lake State Campground

North-South Lake is the biggest and most popular state campground in the Catskill Forest Preserve, offering extraordinary scenic beauty, and historical sites. The summer season offers swimming, hiking, camping, fishing, and non-motorized boating. Canoe, kayak, paddleboat, and rowboat rentals are available. The park features marked hiking trails, pavilions, bathhouses, and playground.

Thomas Cole National Historic Site

The Thomas Cole National Historic Site is the former home of Hudson River School of Art founder, Thomas Cole. Located in the village of Catskill, the house, called Cedar Grove, and Cole's studio are open for tours, events, and workshops throughout the year.

Hudson-Athens Lighthouse

1874 Lighthouse in the Majestic Hudson River. Anchored in the middle of the Hudson River between Hudson and Athens, the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse has guided boats through the channel since 1874. With its distinctive red-brick design and panoramic river views, it remains one of the region’s most recognizable historic landmarks. Although the lighthouse is temporarily closed to visitors due to ongoing preservation work, it continues to capture the imagination of travelers and locals alike. Designated an endangered historic site, the lighthouse is in the midst of vital restoration to protect its structure and legacy for generations to come.
