The word Sangeet means 'music', and among the traditional Indian pre-wedding rituals, the Sangeet night is when the festivities really get started! This event is a way to celebrate not only the couple's union, but also the bonding of their families. We are combining the Sangeet with the Mehndi function, which is traditionally a party where the bridal party and guests have henna applied. You can expect music, performances, dinner, and a lively dance floor.
For the Sangeet, we recommend festive Indian or colorful cocktail attire. If you are thinking about wearing Indian attire at some point during the wedding weekend, this is the night to do so! For women, we suggest a lehenga (top and skirt), sari, salwar kameez, anarkali, cocktail dress, or jumpsuit. For men, we suggest a kurta, sherwani, nehru jacket, suit, or sport coat.
The Barat is a joyful ritual that will begin our wedding day! Traditionally, the barat was a procession from the groom's hometown to the wedding venue (don't worry, we aren't making Manish ride down from New York...just from the hotel gate). His family and friends lead the way with music and dancing. At the end of the Barat, the bride's family welcomes the groom and his family. All guests are invited to the Barat and should plan to arrive at the wedding venue in time for this event.
For the Wedding Ceremony, you will see many people wearing Indian outfits as well. If you don’t have traditional Indian clothes, no need to worry – semi-formal attire including dresses, suits, and sport coats are all appropriate! The brighter the color the better! The ceremony is outdoors (bring some sunglasses), weather permitting. The temperature in Savannah in October can be expected to be highs in the mid-80s to low-70s with lows in the 50s and 60s. You may need a wrap!
The evening reception is black tie optional- think tux, suits, evening gowns, and cocktail dresses! For the ladies, a saree, lehenga, or anarkali will work as well!
There are several great options for renting Indian formal wear: https://preserve.rent https://borrowthebazaar.com If you would like to buy online, check out: Kalkifashion.com Azafashions.com https://www.perniaspopupshop.com.
We would recommend parking at the Savannah Convention Center for $5 per day (8 minute walk to adjacent wedding venue) if you are bringing your car as this is cheaper than parking at the Westin hotel. Self-parking rate at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa is currently $20 per day per car.
The weather is Savannah is moderate, however like any coastal city unpredictable. Please bring a jacket or shawl as portions of the weekend will be outdoors.
