Our story began in the winter of 2013 in typical fashion. While grocery shopping, Mike had his head in his phone and rounded a corner too fast bumping a stranger's cart in the dairy aisle. He barely noticed, he had just gotten a match on a dating app! Although Nina's grammar infuriated Mike, he decided she was cute enough to send her a message asking if she would like to play indoor golf. She did not. But she did agree to meet for a drink. On the only date of the year that's also a phrase. Nina and Mike both Marched 4th to an East Village bar. After sharing stories, laughs, and a few drinks they took an important first step. They shared a grilled cheese the first of many times they would be gluttons together. They kissed goodnight and parted ways, Mike to Queens, Nina to Brooklyn. In the morning, Nina woke to a text from Mike that he had passed out and been awakened by an MTA employee in Coney Island. Nina and Mike spent over 2 years going back and forth between BK and Queens before finding a place they both love. They loved it so much, they recently moved to an apartment right across the street from their first. Their careers have had ups and downs, with the downs always seeming to come right on the heels of ups. Mike’s Christmas night firing and Nina’s layoff right after running the NYC Half are lowlights. But both lead to great things. Mike now runs a thriving business and Nina enjoyed her freelance adventure before recently settling into a much better job. They went on some adventures along the way. Learning to scuba dive and lobster hunt together, dining at some of the best restaurants in NYC, and getting stranded in a vacant hotel and running around a tiny airport to find a plane that could get them out of Honduras! While Mike still struggles to get Nina to understand the difference between “then” and “than” and Nina attempts to keep Mike from falling asleep in public, they’ve decided to fight those battles together for the rest of their lives.
