Question

Conversion Calculator

Answer

Download ClevCalc (the app symbol is blue with a red "equal" sign) on the App Store for currency, time zone, and metric to US unit conversions. This app is great because it does not require WiFi or cell signal!

Question

What do I pack?

Answer

It is likely to be between 20-45°F (heavy wind chill likely) throughout the week, so packing accordingly is very important. Ladies- Ample combinations of 1. A thin shirt 2. A warm sweater (i.e. knit sweater or fleece quarter zip) to put over the thin shirt, (for as cold as it is outside, it will be equally and oppositely warm indoors) and 3. A really good wind-breaking jacket, with jeans or cold-weather leggings will be key for day-to-day wear. Gentlemen- do NOT skimp on the warm clothes. Ample combinations of 1. A long-sleeve dri-fit or other breathable t-shirt under 2. a nice sweater or fleece crew neck will be key for day-to-day wear, especially on tours/excursions. Jeans and warm weather joggers are recommended as well. Formal wear- wedding attire is black tie optional, but I hope no one will be shy from wearing their warmest winter jacket if needed- we will try to take as many pictures as possible inside if the weather requires it. Shoes- one pair of walking shoes, one pair of versatile and neutral-colored smart/casual shoes, one pair of formal shoes, and a pair of slippers are all you should need. The couple tends to pack light though! Swimsuits! (?) - Iceland is famous for "bathing culture" because of their access to geothermal heat and energy. There are lots of natural and man-made hot springs (the Sky Lagoon, home of the welcome party, is one of these!). For everyone- DO NOT forget your hat, gloves, scarf, and socks. Additionally, it is general best practice to bring 2 days worth of clothes in your carry on luggage, and to wear your winter jacket on the plane to Iceland in case of issues with luggage or flight/layover delays. There are also occasions where you may be asked to walk off the plane outside to board a shuttle to the airport upon arrival (or opposite on the return flight). Just do your best to be prepared for potential cold weather! Finally, don't forget your undies & Jammies!

Question

Do I need to bring a plug adapter?

Answer

YES. (Please read) Iceland has different plug outlets than the US, and power adapters will be required for any item that is plugged into a wall. These can be purchased at the duty free store, or you can use this link to find an all-in-one adapter which includes USB, USB-C, and general plug connections.* https://a.co/d/fKqh16R *Power adapters will not work for American hair tools or similar plug-in items. Maddie and Heather had this issue when they went to Iceland in March. Please consider using one of the hotel-provided hair dryers during your stay, or purchasing European hair tools. There are a number of guests who may be able to share their hair dryers/straighteners as well.

Question

What time should I arrive at the ceremony?

Answer

The ceremony is planned for 2pm local time. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early as seating will be first come first served.

Question

Is there Uber in Iceland?

Answer

NO. (Please read) But, you can call and hail taxis. Taxis wait in Reykjavík on Lækjargata (laekjargata) street near the hot dog stand (which you will likely learn about when you are there)! The taxis usually start to gather in the city 10:30-11:00pm, but can be called any time of day. Taxis can be called for pickup using +354 561 0000. The +354 is like the US +1. Taxis take around 5-10 minutes to arrive, and all drivers speak English. Pay by card before exiting the taxi.

Question

Iceland DOES have Costco

Answer

Any visitors who seek familiar surroundings can visit a Costco in Reykjavik for their grocery needs. Certain brands or products found in the US may not be available, but Costco staples can be found here.

Question

What about the booze?

Answer

The couple recommends purchasing alcohol at the duty free store and potentially packing a flask (liquor in Iceland can be pricey because of import taxes and accessibility issues). Please exercise discretion if you do decide to bring a flask. 6 "units" (defined in link below) are allowed at the duty free per person of legal drinking age (20 in Iceland, 21 in the US, even at duty free). https://www.whatson.is/icelandic-customs-regulations-and-tax-free-shopping/#:~:text=Spirits%20(22%2D55%25)%3A%2025cl,units%2C%201l%20%3D%204%20units.&text=Wine%20and%20liqueur%20(under%2022,unit%2C%201l%20%3D%201.3%20units. To purchase alcohol in Iceland, you can visit VINBUÐIN (translates to "wine store"), or Costco, but options may be limited. Please contact the couple if you would like to help stock the bar for the cocktail party on the 27th! Nicole: (248)918-9595 Gummi: (704)492-6569

Question

What is the couple's #1 recommendation for sightseeing?

Answer

Gummi's answer: Tour the golden circle (~4 hours or Selljalandsfoss (~3.5 hours total). Nicole's answer: Visit the black sand beach (Selljalandsfoss is part of this drive) (~5-6 hours). Combined answer: if you have the means & group size for a helicopter or small plane tour, omg do that. Alternatively, experience the beauty of Iceland with Flyover Iceland, located in Reykjavik (see link below, this is available on travel booking websites as well). A quick and easy option if you are only staying for a short time! https://www.flyovericeland.com/?gad_source=1

Question

Do I bring a gift to Iceland?

Answer

Thank you for considering sending a gift! Your presence is a present enough, but please see below for some requests for those who choose to indulge the Couple: For U.S. travelers, the couple requests sending gifts to their residence at 6208 Colchester Place, Charlotte, NC 28210. The couple is happy to accept gifts in-person from guests who live in Iceland in the event that shipping or currency exchange rates cause issues on Zola. However, the couple asks for consideration related to the size of the gift as they will have to transport this back in their personal luggage.
