BETHANY "Do you want some company while you watch your movie?" NICLAS (eyes lighting up) "Sure... I have to go clean my apartment first." After a rehearsal for Peter Pan: The Musical, Niclas, the most flamboyant pirate, and Bethany, the stage manager/ferocious crocodile, end up sitting next to one another at a bar. They laugh, talk, and strike up a connection. Fast forward to the next day. Bethany asks if Niclas would like some company while watching his newest DVD from Netflix after rehearsal. He says, "Sure." They have a great time talking through a movie that neither of them knows the plot of to this day, eating a meal of pan-fried tomatoes and feta, and then turning on "Aladdin" to prove the Disney adulting starts early. Both decide they would like to do it again sometime.
NICLAS (via text) "Q2Q is taking so long. I don't think I'm going to get out in time for us to do dinner." BETHANY (via text) "That's okay." NICLAS "Do you want to just get some cheesecake from Safeway and watch Armageddon (on VHS) at my place?" BETHANY "Yeah, that sounds like fun." They proceed to have a magical, if unconventional, first official date. Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler fall in love. Bruce Willis saves the day. Niclas and Bethany dance to Aerosmith in the living room as the credits roll...
They kiss under the stage as the show goes on above them. Time speeds up. They dance to Journey in the kitchen on Thanksgiving. They open a show together, her first working with his company. Another show. This time she designs a mix of rom-com music to carry the audience along. More and more shows. Readings, plays, musicals. Sometimes the audience is full, sometimes the seats are empty. But they are always together. He sings in a tree. She watches, secretly, from the booth. They go to Disneyland. A first vacation together. She goes to school. He diligently lies on the table as she perfects her massage. They move in together. Her dog, Roxie, bullies him for years. He sleeps on the couch to make the dog happy. Eventually, the dog grows to love him. He's finally allowed to sleep in bed again. Life moves on. Jobs change. She begins to teach. He starts lighting concerts, auctions, and events instead of just theater. She knits. He reads. They go on more vacations. The beach. The woods. Back to Disneyland. Everything stops. Lockdown. Their world gets smaller. But they have each other. She knits. He does puzzles. They go on nightly walks with the dog. Slowly the world opens back up. Work comes back with a vengeance. He is seemingly gone for weeks at a time, struggling to rebuild his business and career. She goes back to school, expanding her skills and the minds of children as the days move ahead. They create plays and teaching videos and sweaters. They long for every spare minute they can have together. They plan a trip for August, back to Disneyland where everything slows down and they can just be together for a few days...
EXT. Disneyland, Day. PHOTOGRAPHER "Okay, now turn around and look at the castle." Niclas reaches into his pocket and pulls out the ring box he has been hiding in the basement for weeks. He opens it behind his back so the photographer can see the sparkle. At this point the only people who know what's coming are Niclas, the photographer, the second photographer who manages to catch the hint with his eagle-eyed perception, and the jeweler in Australia who made the ring. Bethany is oblivious. They turn back to the camera. Niclas kneels. NICLAS "You want to get married?" BETHANY (doing a happy dance) "Yeah? Yeah! AHHHHHHHHH!" Bethany screams in delight. Niclas, not expecting the adorable happy dance with accompanies her scream, breaks into a wide grin. They kiss, for the first time as a betrothed couple. Niclas breathes a sigh of relief. Weeks of planning, searching for the perfect ring, realizing the ring won't arrive in time, getting a backup ring, flying to California during a hurricane, tricking Bethany into leaving the room so he can sneak the ring out of his suitcase and into his pocket, separating at security so there's no danger of her seeing the box in advance, changing their plans over and over that morning as he tries to remind Bethany about taking a castle picture, and standing in one more line as the clouds cleared and the future beckoned have all paid off at last. He smiles. She smiles. Bethany sits on his knee and he slides the ring onto her finger.
