How We Met

A Tale As Old As Time

We met at a concert down in San Diego, California. I (Nickie) was visiting my best friend Estella down in San Diego for my birthday in February of 2020. We had tickets to the Miranda Lambert concert with Cody Johnson and Lanco opening. When we arrived at the venue, Lanco had started playing and the song "born to love you" was blaring through the stadium. I know this is cheesy, but I stopped myself and thought "imagine if you met the love of your life here" (I swear that thought happened and I will never forget it). We go down to our seats and the concert continues and soon Cody Johnson comes on. Well you know how much I love a cold beer and America so when Cody Johnson comes on its time to have fun! I was signing along with my girlfriends and soon this guy comes down and stands next to me. He had a flannel, jeans, and boots on, but the first thing I noticed was his ears. They looked straight out of a vegetable patch full of cauliflower (sorry honey!). The man introduced himself as Mitch and shook my hand and when I said "Hi, I'm Nickie!" he looked away from me like something had surprised him. He then told me that I shared the same name as his mother! This fella had been enjoying some drinks so his "give a damn" factor was waning. He then asked, "So are you a city girl or what?"; to which I laughed. I then responded "Do city girls recognize Real Tree Edge camo?" to which I pointed to the boots he was wearing. That comment stopped him in his tracks. Mitch and I talked for a bit and then I asked him if he didn't mind if I focused on the friends I had come to the concert with. He looked very displeased but went back up the risers to his group of friends. About 5 minutes later, here comes Mitch back down. I reminded him of what I had just asked and he reluctantly went back up again. This continued about 5 more times over the next hour. I found this practice annoying but somewhat charming that he just couldn't not be around me. As time went on, more beers were consumed, we sang every word of every song, and spent the rest of the concert together with my friends. I will say, we ended up kissing a couple times during the concert as well (sorry mom). At the end of the concert, Mitch asked if I would like to come to the next bar with them to which I replied "I'm not leaving the girls I came with" and he said the same about his friends because they actually lived an hour north of San Diego. We exchanged numbers and went about our lives. The next day I could not stop thinking about him and I later found out that he thought he blew it with me because of his intoxication. He also saved my number in his phone as AAA1greeneyeloveofyourlife (the AAA1 so it would be the first entry lol). I later went back to Oregon where I was living, and we started our long-distance journey. Over the next three years, we visited each other in California, Virginia, North Carolina, Iowa, Oregon, and Guantanamo Bay Cuba before getting engaged in Georgia. Thank you all for reading this horrendously long story and I hope to get Mitch's side of the story somewhere on the website soon!
