We first met camping and dancing at a music festival in Plumas National Forest during the summer of 2018. As we continued to get to know each other while attending concerts back home in the Bay Area, our friendship grew into something more. Then one Saturday morning in late September, Sophie suggested the two of us go on a bike ride through the Berkeley hills. As we meandered through neighborhoods and redwoods, and past beautiful vistas of the bay, we found ourselves deep in conversation, learning about each other's lives in a way we previously hadn’t. Our connection took a huge leap that day, in a way we had never experienced before. We weren't sure it was a first date going into that bike ride, but it soon became apparent that this journey was the first of many we'd take together as a happy couple.
In October 2020, we visited Sophie's parents in San Diego while Sophie prepped for her final architecture licensing exam. Nick was hoping to pop the question after her exams because he didn’t want to interrupt her studies. He played it cool through a string of unplanned events and a few test reschedules that made timing the surprise very difficult. But all that difficulty was worth it when Sophie passed her exam on October 26th. It was a huge accomplishment she had been working at for several years, and to celebrate, Nick proposed...a short walk in the Torrey Pines Nature Reserve. Sophie was on cloud nine and couldn't imagine how the day could get any better. At the end of the hike, with the sun setting and the surprise ready, Sophie turned and said "Nick, if we ever...when we ever...I want it to be at a place like this." Nick couldn’t believe his ears. He thought Sophie had caught wind of his plans, and that the surprise was ruined. But as it turned out, Sophie “hinting” at an ideal proposal spot was just a coincidence. So it was an even bigger surprise when Nick responded "Well, are you ready?" as he got down on one knee. And she said yes :)
