We partially hiked up Mt. Etna, and got to visit one of the Catania wineries, finally cooling off in le Gole dell'Alcantara, which is the natural canyon formed by lava columns as a result of volcanic activity. The river that runs through here has fish running up and down the stream, and is exceptionally cold, but the perfect spot on a hot Sicilian day.
If there is one thing you should absolutely do on your stay... it is to go on a boat tour! This one was a fun tour with multiple swim spots. What makes these locations unique is the turquoise waters and the stops at unique tuna port towns. Don't forget your googles!
From famous Mondello beach (make sure you make a reservation for chairs and umbrella!), the the piazze and the never ending pizza and arancini stores... this rich historic and architectural town is a close must see destination! Palermo is likely where most of us will be flying into.
We all know Taormina... this beautiful town has an upper and lower. The upper is where the luxurious vacation and you will see the history and night life, while the lower is where you must go see Isola Bella, a beautiful swim spot and nature reserve. This was one Alessia and Nick's favorite stays, and another opportunity to pull out those googles and see all the starfish, and water life.
These beautiful islands all offer something unique and different... from clay black sand beaches, intimate resort towns, to an erupting volcano island. Definitely spend a couple days if you are going to explore the islands, and look into the many boat tours that allow you to explore the islands. NOTE: Liberty Lines is the ferry that you will likely have to take from a port to any of these islands.
