The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, located in Galicia in northwestern Spain, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Christianity. According to tradition, it houses the tomb of Saint James the Great (Santiago in Spanish), one of Jesus Christ’s apostles. His remains are believed to have been brought to Galicia in the 9th century, sparking a wave of devotion that led to the development of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), a major pilgrimage route across Europe. Construction of the current Romanesque cathedral began in 1075 under the reign of King Alfonso VI of León and Castile, and it was consecrated in 1211. Over the centuries, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements were added, most notably the Baroque façade of the Obradoiro, completed in the 18th century. The cathedral became a symbol of Christian resistance during the Reconquista and remains a cultural and spiritual landmark, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
