Nathaniel and I were both invited to attend the honors weekend at Houghton College our senior year of high school. He thought I was pretty cute and so introduced himself. We got along very well and stuck close by each other the whole honors weekend. We exchanged phone numbers before leaving and kept in touch. Little did we know that it would lead to falling in love with each other!
How did he do it, you ask? Well. After a long day (12 hours) working as a veterinary assistant for a busy practice close to Nathaniel's hometown, I came home beat, but also excited. Nathaniel and I had planned a hiking trip, mostly on the fly, the week before. So, even though we were both tired, we wanted to make time for each other and we thought why not? So, we went out to this community outdoor space nearby called Squanz Pond. We stepped out of the vehicle and my eyes met with some very dark clouds. The wind started to pick up and make waves across the pond. I lean over the Nathaniel and say, "Hey, maybe we should come back another day. It looks like it is about to pour." Nathaniel was confident in our decision and said something like, "No no, it won't take too long. And hey, the view is really worth it!" I shrugged in off and followed along. We skirted the edge of the pond and then came over a bank with a few wooden steps. Quite like a giddy school girl, I sprinted down the steps and came to a beautiful little wooden bridge. I walked across it and there was a string of light blocking off the exit. Rather confused, I turned and asked Nathaniel why he thought it was blocked off and he met my confusion with a grin ear to ear. He knelt down and I knew exactly what was going on at that moment. I screamed and was so excited I knelt down with him and shouted, "NO WAY!" He tells me that the "NO" came off a little too loudly, and initially scared him! But there was nothing to fear. I quickly said of course and his sister, Rachel (bridesmaid), came out of the woods with her friend. They captured (albeit very dark due to the imminent stormy weather), everything! Scream included!
Once upon a time, I was lazy and exhausted and remained in bed for far too long. Nay Nay knew that I needed to get up, and so drug me from his guest room bed and set me atop a stool in his kitchen. Eyeing me to make sure I didn't tumble toward the tile floor, he backed away toward the refrigerator. He opens the fridge, peruses the grocery items and says to me, "Babe, you know what really wakes you up in the morning?" I glance up. He continues, "Citrus, and objects flying at your face." Through half slit eyes, I make eye contact with the orange which had been lobbed through the air, and *WHAM* it smacks me right in the head like something out of a comic book. I look across the island to Nathaniel, but he is GONE... in a pile of contorted laughter on the floor. This is one of our favorite stories that we tell to people and honestly, it describes us so well!
