How we met

by Nathaniel

I was a clueless junior and she was my "IBud", a mentor to introduce me to the IB Program in high school. Naturally, I was full of questions- but we didn't really get to know each other until we spent a week on a bus together in Germany during an orchestra trip. After that adventure, I managed to take Krista to prom as "friends"; although, she had a boyfriend when I asked her. Then came a fun summer- she showed me around Ann Arbor a few times, but we both knew she would be moving to Turkey for the next ten months. That year was mostly quiet. Aside from the occasional "star-crossed-lovers" jokes from friends, we mostly put each other out of our minds. However, all of that changed when Krista watched the film "Love in the Time of Cholera" and fell head over heels... for whatever reason. A few weeks after she got back, I finally asked her out placing my odds at 60-40. Oddly enough, she thought we were already dating. Since then, we've grown, argued, and laughed in 13 countries as a couple, with many more to come as man and wife.

The Proposal

by Nathaniel

The night was sultry. I took her to the all too predictable Dexter boardwalk where we used to laugh, trot piggy-back, and pick gnats out of each other's eyes. We had already made it to our usual turning point and were starting to head back; however, there were still two problems at hand. One, rather than aligning as planned, the stars remained hidden behind a thick layer of fog. Two, it was clear she knew my every move. See, if I've learned anything about proposals, it's that you need to surprise the woman-- because the last thing you want is for her to think about the answer. Luckily, I had a plan. Ring in hand, I threw myself at the ground as hard as I could, making all sorts of terrible, but surprising, noises. Poor Krista, thinking I was about to get on one knee, was worried I'd be too embarrassed from the fall to pop the question that night. However, to her delight, I lunged into position and showed her the best ring Amazon could buy. She was too stunned to reply, but I could tell from her beautiful fits of tears that "it's a yes!" We embraced and you wouldn't believe- the fog cleared, revealing a bright orange harvest moon. Looking back, while silly, it made one of the best moments of our lives also one of the most memorable. And for that, I have no regrets.
