We are so excited to celebrate with you in beautiful Rio de Janeiro! For your stay, we recommend booking accommodations in the South Zone neighborhoods, which include Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon. These areas offer beautiful beaches, great restaurants, and easy access to many local attractions. For your safety and comfort, we recommend avoiding accommodations in the North Zone or in favela communities. The best place to stay in Rio de Janeiro depends on your travel style, budget, and what you want to experience (beach, nightlife, culture, safety). Here’s a breakdown of the top neighborhoods for different types of travelers: 🌊 1. Ipanema – Best Overall • Why stay here: Safe, upscale, beautiful beach, walkable, stylish restaurants and shops. • Vibe: Trendy, cosmopolitan. • Beach: Ipanema Beach is iconic, especially Posto 9 (cool crowd) and Posto 10 (more local). • Safety: One of the safest areas for tourists. • Good for: First-timers, couples, solo travelers, beach lovers. 🔹 Downsides: More expensive than other areas. 🏖️ 2. Copacabana – Best for Classic Beach Vibes & Budget • Why stay here: Famous beach, tons of hotels, easy access to transportation and attractions. • Vibe: Lively, historic, diverse crowd. • Beach: Copacabana Beach is busy but iconic. Great for walking, people-watching. • Safety: Generally safe in well-trafficked areas; avoid going too far inland at night. 🔹 Downsides: Can feel a bit chaotic or touristy; watch for pickpockets. 🌳 3. Leblon – Most Upscale & Family-Friendly • Why stay here: Quiet, safe, very upscale. Best for families or those seeking peace. • Vibe: Affluent and residential. • Beach: Beautiful, more relaxed than Ipanema. • Safety: One of the safest neighborhoods in Rio. 🔹 Downsides: Expensive, less nightlife than Ipanema/Copacabana.
Expect a high of 81°F and a low of 68°F. October - November (Brazil's spring) is an ideal time for visitors seeking sun and adventure. Mild and relatively dry weather (more rain than in the winter but less than the summer), fewer crowds and more room to sprawl out on the beaches are all part of the allure. If you don't mind missing the festival hoopla, you'll save money by booking a hotel at this time of year.
Unlike some other South American countries US dollars are rarely accepted in Brazil. Therefore we recommend you have some reais in cash. However, you are unlikely to be able to get Brazilian reais in your home country and if you can you are not likely to get a good exchange rate. Therefore we recommend withdrawing some reais from an ATM on arrival or taking a small amount of US dollars with you that can be more easily exchanged for local currency. All major credit and debit cards are accepted in Brazil. Smaller shops, kiosks, markets and more informal restaurants in remote areas may only accept cash, so make sure you have some with you as a back up.
We recommend booking flights and accommodations as early as possible, ideally 3–6 months in advance, especially since Rio is a popular destination.
