The marriage ceremony of the Orthodox church is steeped in ritual and tradition, each of which has special meaning and significance. The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony consists of two parts: the Betrothal and Crowning. The crowns are a sign of the glory and honor with which God crowns the couple during the sacrament, symbolizing their own family "kingdom" as well as the crowns of martyrdom and self-sacrifice. The bridal pair also partakes of the Common Cup, which symbolizes the mutual sharing of joy (doubled) and sorrow (halved). Near the end of the ceremony, the priest leads the bridal pair in a ceremonial procession, during which significant chants are sung, remembering holy men and women and martyrs from the Old and New Testaments.
Worshippers generally remain standing for Eastern Orthodox services. Guests should feel free to visit the church hall adjacent to the church for some water or sit down for a break when tired (chairs are placed along the wall). Standing during the Scripture readings and the act of Crowning is greatly encouraged. It is not the practice of the Orthodox to applaud in church. Feel free to greet the bridal pair with applause and cheers outside of the church worship space. Restrooms are located at the back of the church hall (and to the right).
The parish does not have restrictions as to when photographs can be taken. However, please remain respectful of the space and stay to the right or left side of the bridal party. We will have a professional photographer at the wedding, but would appreciate your sharing any photos that you take with us.
There is street parking available near the church, located at the corner of 17th St & Shepherd St NW. We recommend that you allow yourself some extra time to find parking. Please be mindful of the street signs and not blocking any of the private driveways :)
You may use the parking garage located directly under Cesco at 7401 Woodmont Avenue (also 2 Bethesda Metro Centro). Please note that Woodmont Avenue is a one-way street from Old Georgetown Road. From Woodmont, turn LEFT onto North Avenue, then an immediate RIGHT at the parking booth and down the ramp to the Colonial Parking garage. Weekend rate is $4 per car. Entrance to Cesco is from the elevator lobby or from the street on Woodmont. There are several other parking garages within a few blocks in the Bethesda Row area.
