For the rehearsal dinner, we are keeping it casual- we will be heading to a chill spot right on the water close to the resort, and we will have transportation organized. For the wedding, dress code is Semi-Formal- think Tropical Chic Sunset! It's going to be warm, lush and beautiful (and it's mango season!) so come as colorful as you wish! Note, it's an outdoor setting so plan accordingly. The resort has a dress code for dinner in the common spaces so please take a look before you pack: https://www.roundhill.com/faqs
Okay here we go! First of all, everyone needs a passport so make sure your passport isn't expired because the pandemic was rough for all of us. Second, there are two airports in Jamaica- FLY INTO MONTEGO BAY- Sangster International! Delta and JetBlue are preferred through Sangster International, and that pretty much means you will get your bags in a reasonable time after you land. You can use other airlines, I just recommend packing a lunch while you wait for your bags. For transport to the hotel, Round Hill and ANY other legitimate resort will provide transportation to and from the airport at a reasonable cost. Do not use taxis at the airport and do not get in a car with anyone not clearly from your resort. If you insist on going rogue, make sure any driver you book is certified through the Jamaica Tourist Board. When you head back to America (boo hiss), please arrive at the airport 3 hours before your flight. Looking for an expedited trip back? We highly recommend Global Entry- https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global-entry/how-apply - it's reasonable, lasts for years, and after a brief application and interview, U.S. customs will be a breeze. It's worth one trip, I assure you, and Global Entry doubles as TSA pre-check in the U.S. so it expedites all domestic travel too.
Jamaica, like many countries that were colonized, suffered under brutal regimes that perpetuated forced conversion to Christianity and quota-based slavery. British anti-sodomy laws are still on the books in Jamaica, and cis gay men face the brunt of anti-gay sentiment and action in the country due to the deep rooted misogyny planted by the British. It’s worth nothing that sodomy was illegal in the US until 2003- over 270 years after America declared independence. Jamaica, being only 60 years old, in many ways has surpassed the US progressively (JA has had a female prime minister, for example). Organizations like TransWave Jamaica and Equality Jamaica and independent influencers are pressuring the government to move forward while supporting gay and trans Jamaicans who are trying to survive and thrive on the island. In our limited experience, we have had nothing but positive experiences, open arms, and one time a random guy told us, “Merry Christmas!” when he figured it out. We love this country because of its flaws, not in spite of them. People should be so lucky.
