Charlotte and Charles should honestly have appeared on the Duke Alumni Instagram page by now… It’s a hot July afternoon the summer before our sweethearts head to college and the day of the Duke DC Send-Off party for the Class of 2018. Charles meets a bubbly brunette in a blue striped dress and soon finds out that they are actually standing in her backyard - her parents were hosting the party. Charlotte will absolutely deny that she Facebook stalked the guest list prior to the party. Laurie Halverson recalls Charles being super cordial to the party’s hosts. Christy and Greg Gosnell claim they watched that boy fall in love. Following the send-off party, there would be a series of events prior to their first date on October 3rd, 2014. 1. Charles asks for Charlotte’s number over Facebook “so they can keep in touch about moving to Duke!” 2. Charles invites Charlotte to a haunted mine a week later. She declines. 3. The two move in to their dorms at the end of August. Charles seeks Charlotte out at a freshmen welcome carnival. According to the groom, Charlotte ignored him that night. According to the bride, she was focused on making new friends. 4. The two don’t talk much until Charles makes eye contact, while otherwise engaged, during a fun night at Shooters! 5. Charlotte has too much fun at Shooters a week later, and Charles walks her home safely like a gentleman. 6. The pair start texting regularly and have late night chats on the swinging benches outside of Charlotte’s dorm. Charles invites Charlotte to see a stand-up comedian as friends. 7. Charles changes his mind a week later, asking Charlotte, “Hey, you know that Bo Burnham thing next Friday? What if we made it a date?” 7 years later to the day they met and he’d ask a similar question, though this time with a ring.
