How We Met

The Mail Order Bride (Legend of the Matchmaker)

It was like a dream... A distant tale told under the starry night sky or over drinks with a friend about some distant beings. But now this is us - a love so made, a union divinely arranged and a future continually unfolding as it should be. POV: The Matchmaker It was another boring day at work. It was November and the weather was being indecisive again, she wasn't sure how motivated she was to keep going through this course but, oh well, she needed to make good use of the time. The music stopped playing in her ears, what was that? She turned to check her phone. Oh my! It was Uncle Kenneth! He was the one far away in the United Kingdom and between the both of them she was the one who probably needed this relationship. She smiled and picked the call making up her mind to do better and reciprocate his taking out time to contact and check on her from time to time. "Uncle Ken!" She called out fondly over the phone, "it's been a while o, na you try pass fa" "Eh ehn... So you have my number Hephzibah," he replied teasingly in his usual calm voice. The conversation went smoothly like it always did whenever he called. It was a wonder how he managed to be so lively, cool and never awkward about how to carry on the conversation even though they didn't speak often. But today, today he seemed to bring the usual lively banter to an end more quickly than usual. Okaaaaayyy... What's up with Uncle Kenneth today? Then he cleared his throat and she smiled. "Hephzibah," he said calmly like he wasn't about to ask something out of the ordinary, "that your elder sister - is she still single?" Her eyes lit up and it was like someone lit a match and tossed it unto her already dramatic personality, "Hmmmm Uncle Kenneth, yes oh she is single. In fact, she is so single that we don't know what to do with her. At this point God will have to drop the man from heaven unto her lap through the ceiling otherwise we don't see how this man is going to come o." He laughed heartily as she made up over exaggerated descriptions to answer his question. When her drama was over, he asked "Alright then, send me her number" "I'm right on it!" She replied smiling from ear to ear. It was almost as if she knew something but what did she know? She wasn't even sure. The call ended as she searched and sent both her big sister's numbers to Uncle Kenneth. Of course she'd need to let her sister know her number was given out so she quickly placed a call to her sis. She picked on the first ring, this was looking very good. "What's up?" Her sister asked cooly Without even bothering to exchange pleasantries she asked, "Do you remember Uncle Kenneth? The one that taught me in secondary school." Big sis seemed to be racking her brain so she added, "The one that read biochemistry like you na. He finished with a first class and is now in the UK." "Oh yes!" She finally came around, "I remember him, what happened to him?" "I just sent him your numbers. If he calls you or sends you a message please answer him. I don't know what you guys will talk about, probably biochemistry but please answer the man-" She cut her off, "why?" "I don't know, but answer the man. Thank you." And the call ended. Hopefully she would do as she was told.

Infact, the match maker forgot all about it - what will be will be. The next "Uncle Kenneth" call to the matchmaker was in December to help him arrange a birthday gift for her big sister. By January her big sis was interviewing the matchmaker and her other siblings about the kind of man this Uncle Kenneth was back when he was their teacher and how they perceived him. Then by February they were planning a wedding! February brought another "Uncle Kenneth" call to the matchmaker as she put together a valentine's day surprise for her big sister and till this day she is like a fairy godmother, taking care of them, running all their errands, watching over them and telling stories of how she helps the heavens make all their dreams come true. POV: The Bride This wasn't what she'd normally do. Why didn't she think it was weird? He was neither a long lost friend nor a work colleague why was she not trying to get out of this situation? It had been some months now since he had been calling randomly to talk about all and sundry. Today over four hours had already psssed. it started with exchanging pleasantries, then she got elaborate birthday gifts which she liked and now she'd been talking on the phone for hours even though she didn't even like calls! At this point she was getting to know a lot about this man and she couldn't say she knew anything she didn't like. As much as she hated undefined relationships he had successfully led her to believe that he was only a friend even though she didn't think she doubted very much his assertion. A lot of time had passed on this call and even though she didn't feel uncomfortable talking to him, she needed to go. "Uncle Ken," she didn't even know why she called him that, maybe because that's what everyone who knows him around her called him, anyway she needed to go "Toh we have talked for a while o, I'll need to go now." There was a pause on the other end of the line but it wasn't awkward at all. "Before you go, can you promise to do a favour for me?" He asked. She almost rolled her eyes, why would she promise what she didn't even know anything about. "But I need to know what it is first na, I don't like making promises I can't or won't keep. Just tell me." She heard him clear his throat on the other end of the line. Was it that her mind wandered, she drifted off or what? She thinks he was saying something about praying, about what he thought about her from the way they had been relating and another thing about what other people had said about her, what did he say? She had no clue - she hadn't heard the answer she was looking for, what answer was she even looking for? There was another pause on the other end of the line, this time longer and she didn't interrupt him at all; he could take his time. Finally he spoke again, "Myiriah, I want you to be my wife." Why? Why isn't she surprised? Why didn't it feel weird? Her heart wasn't racing, she didn't seem confused yet she wasn't offended? What was this feeling? She promised to think and pray about it but it seemed she already knew the answer, what was it about this whole situation? She spent the next few weeks praying like she promised but it didn't feel like she needed to. It felt like she was praying and God was looking at her like, "Are you asking because you don't know or you are just trying to waste both our time?" She confided in her sisters about it and while she was narrating how he asked her to marry him, the youngest asked excitedly, "So what did you say?" She was taken aback, should she have already given an answer? Then what was this confiding session for? "I'm still praying about it na, I want to know what you all think about it and for you to join me in prayers." The youngest rolled her eyes, "I really don't understand why we're praying about this, I thought you were trying to tell us you said yes!"

She still didn't want to get ahead of herself, she took all the time she needed and finally summoned him. She did a lot of beating about the bush just to build the tension on the other end of the call and when she was satisfied with how nervous he was she finally said, "So my answer is yes." His signature long pause followed, she couldn't help smiling; she wondered what was going through his mind, just when she was going to ask if he was alright, his voice finally came through, "Let us pray." Her heart burst with joy and happiness and as she bowed her head in prayer and in submission to God's will and the wonderful gift he had given to her. She just knew that somehow, just somehow she was where she had always wanted to be. POV: The Groom He had been starring at his phone for only God knows how long. What was he going to do? Was this even a good idea? But he had not been able to get it off his mind. He was sure that he was being led this way but it seemed she was doing everything to warn him in advance to not do what he was thinking of doing. He sighed a bit helplessly when someone's voice made him nearly jump out of his skin. Was he that deep in thought? This girl was driving him crazy, he wasn't normally like this. "Ah ahn Kenneth, what are you thinking about like that that my voice scared you." It was just his friend Winifred. "Hmmm... You remember that lady I told you about that I had been talking to?" "Yes! Have you popped the question yet? What did she say?!" She asked excitedly "Popped question ke. Someone that has been emphatically telling me how much she doesn't want to leave Nigeria or live in any other country?" She sighed and shook her head in disbelief, "So you'd rather sit here and wonder about what could have been than get a definite answer and know if you'd move on or try convincing her? Besides what's the worst that could happen?" He gave her a ridiculous look. Did she think it was that easy? Plus he did not like wasting time in decision making, he didn't even understand why he was overthinking this. "Look," she continued, "just go for it. Besides haven't you prayed about it? Or you don't believe God could help her change her mind about that part? That's literally the only thing she doesn't want that is who you are, why think one thing will cancel out the rest of it?" She did have a point, besides even if she said no, if it was God's will and she was submitted to God He would make it somehow. He couldn't trust her preferences and didn't even know if they were set in stone but he knew God and he trusted him and he didn't make this decision outside God. He finally made the move. He didn't even know what was going through his mind that day, he didn't know how he finally did but he did say it. Her reaction was hard to read, she didn't seem angry about it, that was good right? But she didn't even seem surprised, was that a good thing? She promised to think and pray about it so he took her at her word. He tried asking for a time frame but she told him off very cooly. She had that thing about her, that calm and collected energy yet firm and stern. Her confidence didn't scare him, it drew him in. He was going to wait for this one. She didn't stop talking to him through the waiting period and yet their discussions weren't awkward. As they spoke one day, she finally brought up the real thing he had been wanting to hear about. He wasn't sure if she was saying yes or no, wait was she trying to confuse him? This was interesting. After a long journey through and around the bush she said, "So my answer is yes, I'll marry you."

Time stopped. He didn't know exactly how to respond. So all his worries and his fears were not even necessary in the first place, why did he ever even think he would be led where there was no way through? A quiet joy and definite peace filled his soul and he knew that this could only be the hand of God. He knew this glory could not be shared with any man, not even the precious woman whom God just gave to him on a platter of gold. So with gratitude in his heart and a lot of plans already going through his mind - he was due for a call with Hephzibah, she had work to do; he bowed his head, a bright smile across his face and finally said, "Let us pray." Thus the journey began. Two hearts far away across the Atlantic ocean but walking in the same direction, love crossed that ocean and climbed every mountain in between to find them. Like the love the Father has for His children, this Love is here and is here to stay.
