How Steph & Alex MetHow Steph & Alex Met

Steph's first job out of college was at the same place in Columbia City, IN where Alex was already working as a project engineer. One day, about a month into joining the company, Steph was meandering down one of the aisles on the production floor and Alex decided it was now or never to take a shot at introducing himself inorganically to the company's latest engineering hire. His go to conversation starter? The tides and tribulations of installing an irrigation system at your new house in the dead heat of Memorial Day weekend. She did her best to feign interest over three minutes of gripping conversation. Alex tried his hand again months later at team building dinner with Steph's department: as Alex came strolling in--late--he saw the only seat left the table was right next to Stephanie. Score. At some point during dinner, Alex's iPhone showed a notification that it was time for him to water his plants at the house, and that one pathetic notification for a single plant dad spurred on a budding friendship among coworkers. Months later, Alex hosted a Euchre night with some close coworkers and after a couple drinks, one particular shared friend (Jasper--recommend you meet him at the wedding) decided that it was time to firmly slap Alex on the shoulder with the no-nonsense advice of "Just ask her out already!'. Come that following Monday, a panicked Alex asked Steph out to dinner and the rest is history.

The ProposalThe Proposal

September 29th, 2024

As usual, Alex tries over-planning everything: In late 2023, a particularly rough span at work drove us to make impromptu plans for a trip to Scotland, considering that was one of Alex's favorite travel destinations already, and on Steph's short list of places she always wanted to visit, but hadn't yet. As the departure date for the trip slowly approached, Alex realized that the time was right and that there would be no more picturesque place to pop the question. The day of the proposal had been presented to Steph as a high-anticipated hiking day in a particularly beautiful portion the Scottish highlands near Glencoe. To start off the day, Alex told Steph that he was dressing nice and bring a DSLR camera + tripod under the guise that we had not really taken many nice, posed photos of us as a couple. Bringing the camera equipment didn't tip Steph off, and she questioned why any sane person would dress nice for a hiking trip. After a long, scenic drive through the highlands, a few side-stops, and a quick picnic, we set off from our parking spot near a river at the lowest point of a glen (valley) and start walking up through the glen, towards a very specific waterfall that Alex had first visited during his prior trip in 2018. After not even 20 minutes--and roughly a quarter of the way into the expected hike duration--Steph noted that she was experiencing some "internal distress". Within minutes, it was abundantly clear that Steph lacked the gastrointestinal fortitude to continue to the waterfall Alex had been telling her about for several months. Exasperated, Alex begrudgingly gave Steph the option of a) stopping halfway through the hike and looking for a different spot for taking photos or b) continuing to the original destination. The immediate answer was "we're stopping here". Panicked and improvising, Alex leads Steph down from the walking path and towards the river running through the glen, looking for a photo opportunity. Conveniently finding a different, but equally beautiful waterfall, Alex proceeded to take his time setting up the tripod and camera while using Steph model/pose for positioning of the camera. Perhaps due to sheer nerves, Alex took 10 minutes to set up a camera, when it should have only taken a couple. Clicking the auto-capture button, Alex scampered down along the wet rocks to meet her on the edge. After a 10 second initial delay, five photos would be taken, spaced one second apart from each other: First photo was taken with the couple side by side, normally. Steph blinks. Second photo, Alex is reaching into his pocket for the ring. Third photo, Alex shows Steph the ring: Steph goes into fight or flight mode upon seeing the shiny jewelry and the only response she can muster is "what is this thing" and "who is it for". "It's for you, silly" Alex's plans to not account for unexpected deviation. When Steph's questioning ceased, he was only able to get out ~80% of what he originally wanted to tell her. However, in the end, she did say yes. Doesn't end here though, folks. On the way back, with plans for a nice dinner in an old castle, Alex (on cloud nine) is driving a little more spirited than usual, rounds a corner, comes face to face with a poorly parked camper, swerves slightly, slips one side of the car off the road, only to over correct and accidently slice the tire. Tire pressure goes from 30psi to zero in as many seconds. Dinner was missed, and the next 6 hours were a series of phone calls and a much needed bathroom break after holding it in for hours on end. Couldn't have planned it any better!
