How We Met

A Baylor Love Story

Her version: As an athlete at Baylor, I knew I wanted to continue my athletic career. I decided to enter the Sport Management graduate program to get my master’s degree and use my final year of eligibility on the track team. The first day of grad school, I noticed the cute new kid in class and decided to chat with him on the way out. As a professional yapper, I had lots of questions for him. I remember calling my mom to tell her about my day and said there was only one guy in class that I didn’t know, but that he was “too quiet” so I didn’t think we’d be great friends. Spoiler alert: I was very wrong. I started greeting Cannon every day until he ended up sitting next to me, then asked me to be his partner for a project. Our study sessions quickly became far more talking than studying, losing track of the hours that had passed each evening. We continued talking 24/7, spending hours laughing together, and staying up late to continue talking with one another. He really had become my best friend. Cannon asked me on a date and I had a quick moment of panic wondering if this might just be my last first date. From that moment, Cannon continued campaigning to become “official” and start dating. I had hesitations about getting into a relationship before moving to Kansas City, but couldn’t ignore how much I admired his heart and character. Finally, after a few months of Cannon’s campaigns, I decided I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to be with him. Whatever God had in store for my life, I knew I wanted Cannon to be a part of it. After a few months of dating in Waco, and a year of long distance, he moved up to KC in May of 2024. After much anticipation, he popped the question in April of 2025 and I got to say the easiest and best “yes” of my life. I can't wait to spend forever with the man God made for me. His version: People make plans and God laughs… Summer of 2022, Moorea was beginning her grad year at Baylor with plans to focus solely on her last year competing for the track team and staying man-free before moving back to Kansas City after graduation to be close to her family. I had just gotten to Baylor for my first year as a graduate assistant coach for the basketball team with plans to focus on basketball and pursue my coaching career. Clearly we each had our plans. We met on the first day of summer classes. I walked in not knowing a single person and Moorea, of course, knew everyone, except me. Being the social butterfly that she is, she decided to strike up a conversation with me after class. She would probably describe it as her talking and me simply replying, but I thought she was really nice and cute. We didn’t know it, but that was the start. After countless enthusiastic hellos from Moorea and conversations in class, we started to become good friends. When fall semester started, I decided to sit by this beautiful girl and soon we became closer than just good friends. There was something special about her and I couldn’t get enough of talking to her and spending time with her. Texting every day turned into school projects together which turned into going on a first date and eventually becoming official in the spring after my persistence and charm finally convinced her we should continue to date even though she was planning to move to KC. Along this journey, we have created countless memories, been impacted by such incredible people, and have seen God’s goodness in amazing ways. Moorea’s plan of staying man-free and not having a boyfriend when she moved back to KC didn’t work, but God’s plan to give her a man with the qualities she had consistently been praying for in a husband did. And my plan of focusing on pursuing a coaching career didn’t quite work out the way I expected, but God’s plan to bring me back to the Lord, help me find the most incredible woman, and to prioritize the most important things in life did work. God is good and His plans are much better than ours.
